I have noticed that when I hit 5000 revs in 4th gear, I suddenly drop power. The car lunges forward and the boost drops out. The jerk is almost like I've hit the rev limiter or something. The problem does not occuir in any other gear as far as I can tell.

The only other symptoms I noticed this morning were that when I started the car (either cold or after filling up with petrol), the car will hardly boost for the first few minutes. The needle gets to 0 (on stock and aftermarket) and no further. Is this safety boost? It clears after a few minutes and then is fine until I turn the engine off again for a few minutes.

Other than that the car will boost to 11psi and seems to run fine.

Any ideas???

Thanks

Rich

checked the MAF? I cleaned the connector and the TPS connector also when i had the same problem and it went away

it felt as though someone was hitting me from the side at 4500rpm, and wouldnt go any further.

0 boost is usually a siezed turbo. your not getting any nasty noises are you??

safety boost is 7psi

Paul - No strange noises that I can hear mate, it just loses power. If I back off and then start to accelerate again its fine. The power is there in all other gears/revs. Could the turbo be seizing and then releasing?

Could the turbo be seizing and then releasing?

thats what i was wondering - hope not bud :(

As you probably know one of my turbo's ceased on the way to Billing.

Hense I can not get over 0 psi.

Are you getting any smoke form the back at all. It seems strange that it only sticks when cold. As paul says this wouldn't happen if it was safety boost as the car would hit 7psi straigh from the start.

The only time you will get 0 psi and the turbo's are fine is if you are reving it in netrual. All other times you should get + boost.

It may be an idea to check your boost hoses for metal filings just incase the compressor wheels are starting to grind. Take off the outta hoses and check for grey poweder or even worst small metalic filings.

I imagine with your ICE set up you wouldn't hear much from the engine anyway

:D

I'm going to check the pipes etc (planning on putting smithy's hard pipe and rad pipe kits on this weekend anyway, so I'll check while I'm under there.

I really don't want to have to spend on the mechanics just yet - still reeling from totalling up the mods so far.

Hopefully it's nothing serious, but I guess it always comes when you are not ready for it.

Always seems to be around Billing as well, smack bang in the middle of the summer

mine did that i just changed the plugs and all was fine again

when were the plugs last changed?

  • Author

Cadpaul - not sure. Not for a couple of years at least I'd guess.

I've just driven back to Newcastle from Blackpool. When I first started it, for about 5 minutes (as before), there was no boost past about 0. Then it was fine. I gave it a bit of welly on the motorway and it was fine most of the time except when I hit about 5500 revs when it cut out. This time I noticed it happened in 3rd and 4th at roughly the same point in the rev range! Weird!

p.s. it may have issues, but still knocked the smile off a merc cl something that was up my a$$, a 3-series beemer and a souped up MR2, although the latter was not too far behind!!

mine would hit 5500 then stick as if it hit a limiter

later it did the same but it would knock the revs down

i had to stop and restart the car to get over 3000 again

changing the plugs and two new coil packs cured it

the rear 2 plugs were terrible and had worn away the coil packs

A sparking issue could cause that sort of effect especially when you are pulling heavy then you have a spark problem it would be seriously noticeable.

I had a similar issue on me 2hundy, apart from I couldnt hit full boost, it was horrible, it would boost up then at about three quater boost the engine would make a cracking noise and stop pulling throwing me forward.

I didnt like the sound of it at all I thought something was very wrong by the seriousness of the fault.

I changed all of the plugs, and serviced it as a first result, it was fine. Never had the problem on it since.

The strange thing is with yours tho matey you get 0 boost?? if it was a sparking issue, you would feel it running rough as fook if it wasnt running well enough to get past 0 psi, so it sounds like it might not be sparking issue. It cant be a boost leak either or it would more than likely be there all the time? not better then worse then better?

Try and get a consult on it mate see if that throws anything up. Other than that, just give it a good going over, all the little things first to see if it helps.

It does sound to me tho like tubby probs :(

Best of luck matey, at least ya car still looks sweet :D

Cheers. Really will be all show and no go!! :D

I guess it could be 2 seperate problems!?! Intermittent tub problem (e.g. causing zero boost when first starting up), and sparks or something similar causing the problem when under heavy load.

Will start with the sparks me reckons ;)

Cheers guys for all your help.

Just thought matey, if you got sparking problems, perhaps yur car is throwing you into safety boost for a bit, you sure the guage is reading 0 psi? does it feel like0psi? perhaps you got a kink in your vaccum hose to the guage not reading prop all the time.

Safety is supposed to be 7psi but it feels no where like 7 psi it feels more like 2!!!!! My after market guage reads safety boost at 5psi I heard others say the same as 5psi.

when you've got zero boost you will know about it, the Z turns into a real lard arse with no go :(

Know what you mean, but the gauge is reading fine all the time except when the car is stuttering.

Vijay - it really won't pull when the problem occurs, foot goes down engine note stays the same or falters.

I've just driven about 20 mile round trip, some on motorway and some on normal A roads. The stuttering (previously only lasting for a few minutes when first starting up) is in all gears at low revs. Sometimes (say coming off a roundabout onto a slip road) you expect the car to pull and it just won't. I am wondering if the lack of boost is the result rather than the cause. The car stutters and will not pull, then it starts to pull again and the boost is fine. Reckon it could be a sparking problem.

Here's a question - what plugs and where do I get them??

Check the electrical connections on the MAF and TPS, any chance you could have sucked some water into the MAF?

i had similar problems (not sure about the boost though as i never hit 0psi) and cleaning up these connections and resetting the ECU cured them.

Not water I don't think, but it has been sat in Peter's workshop for best part of 9 months covered in dust which probs doesn't help much. I'll check those connections and give them a good clean.

yep, totally agree, get a can of contact cleaner and get cleaning with every connector you can get to :)

its a good place to start, as it will only take 30 minutes,

Check the PTU connectors on both sides and coilpacks too matey. Best pull the plugs whilst yur cleaning the coilpacks and take a looksie.
