How much labour for crankshaft repair???

Well it's my crankshaft that's making the noise in my engine. On the assumption it's just the bearings, how many hours labour do you guys think I'll be looking at paying to get the bearings replaced???

I'm being quoted 24 hours... is this realistic?

Tried to get a quote out of Nissan for comparison, but that's like pulling teeth!!!!

Cheers,

David

time to remorgage me thinks

I just did remortgage!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Money that was for extending my lease is now going to be fixing the car.... just need to make sure the garage aren't gonna rip me off on the labour.

If the engines done a good mileage or been well thrashed it might be smarter getting another one and paying just for an engine swap. If its big end knock its bad enough but if its main bearings and rumble then its pretty serious. A full rebuild from the crank up will cost serious. A bodge with replaced big end shells might make it last a few years but if the crank journals are trashed and it needs major regrinding then the engine might not be worth rebuilding. You could be into diminishing returns. Sorry to sound bleak but you could be writing a blank cheque here.

Did you check what you can buy a new engine from Courtesy in Texas for? The price might not be what you expect - these cars are getting on a bit now.

A second hand one from a reliable source might be good bet after all these cars are getting into the hands of people graduating from fwd hatchbacks and they often wrap them around lamposts within weeks of purchase meaning plenty 2nd hand spare parts.

The car dumped the oil somehow, and no oil led to the damage. Car's only done about 65000 miles, and up until now (in the last 4-5 months of ownership0 it's been absolutely good as gold. Hmmm... guess I'm best off getting them to have the engine out, open it up, see what damage is done, and then make a judgement call from there... be it repair/rebuild or replacement.

I had the exact same problem but it also had been using a lot of water for ages and there was an oil leak on the heads so I decided it wasn't even worth starting on.

If you can get a known good 2nd hand engine then I think that's the way to go.

You will probably have to pay to have your engine pulled and a lot of labour just to find the cause.

You could easily end up paying £500 just to find out that its knackered, when you can get a good engine for £1000 plus fitting.

Courtesy are selling brand new engines for about $6500 I think but the shipping would be silly.

Just be carefull where you take it,as a few people are trying to coin it in from members and really dont have a clue what they are doing.

It's at S and M motors in Kingston... as recommend by a member on here. I can just about hold a conversation on anything mechanical, but no more... hence why I'm on here trying to ensure the labour they are quoting is realistic. 24 hours for crankshaft grinding and bearings souds a little high to me, I would have guessed 15-18 myself, but I don't know enough to argue.

I had a quote of £100.00 to regrind and supply both sets of shells for my sons 200SX, so you need to allow for more journals as its a six, the time quoted was a short week to grind the crank, (they do have other work booked in if they are any good). 24 hours? Sound suspiciously short to me, the engine needs removing, then stripping the bottom end to get the crank out, and then taking to the grinders, and so on..

The S/h Lump Option Is Probably The Way To Go,if You Dumped The Oil,bottom End Is Almost Certainly Sh@@ged!,do Some Digging-tried Andyz?hth :)
