Ok....while the engine is out, and is it worth removing the aformentioned valves - and what gains am I likely to get?

Simon - from what I've read;

 

EGR - only worth *removing* on a race engine. Just replace with a new EGR valve.

AIV - get rid..

It's worth loosing the EGR, just appears to be something else to go wrong and without it you'll have better access to the rest of the engine. According to what I've read before it may effect your fuel consumption, I should think nothing that you'd notice. It also effect emissions, nothing to bad.
