I need some software to copy cd's to mp3 for my alpine unit, i need some soft ware that will sort out the id tags so it will come up on my pop out screen, I've tried some and only comes up with the track names and no album name,

if you are connected to the net, it will also automatically change the file names of the CD and change the ID3/ID2 too.

I use Winamp to rip CDs to MP3, It fills in all the file details (album, track name, artist etc) but only if you tell it to (you need to fiddle around in the settings.

Also make sure you rip to MP3 format not M4A (or whatever its called, apparently that is the "new version" of mp3, most players wont touch that format yet....)

You can get an eval version I think and play around with it before you shell out your hard earned (or just get a crack like everybody else.. you aint seen me right!!)

The 6.x version of Nero does it pretty well too.

cheers chaps' i'll give it a go,i know the alpine unit is very fussy with file names

My favourite is a piece of Japanese s/w called cd2wav32, it rips, sets the tags and encodes in one go and even on my old antiquated system it was encoding at 22x realtime speed using the gogo.dll encoder.

Try a search on google. All the web pages are in Jap (with occasional translation) but the prog itself is in English. If you can't get hold of it then I'll email you a copy.

Make sure it's configured right, you sometimes need to tell it which .dll encoder to use, like GoGo or Lame. Just about to email you a copy which should be complete.

You also need to make sure the cddb (or freeddb) is configured to get the tags done automatically

Cheers andy, you going to billing, i'm driving up early sat morning with the misses

Just a small point, but I find wma a lot better than mp3- generally you don't get the same level of compression artifacts, so you can have higher quality or more choons. Quality of mp3 @ 128kb/s = wma @ 96kb/s.

WMA is undeniably better quality but MP3 is universal and has no digital media rights management code inbuilt, so it has to be favourite.

We're planning to go Sunday, but weather may change plans ....
