The car is using a Doolz twin POP intake with a single AFM and custom chip with 555's.

The engine runs OK when being revved but when idling the revs rise and fall and it stumbles a bit.

The strange thing is it was very windy last night and it seemed to do it every time the wind blew hard.

The clutch isn't working so it's stationery but i don't know how it would be when moving.

Has anyone noticed this problem?

I'm wondering if the wind blowing on the unmetered bank of the engine is making a difference and fitting my AFR and a second AFM will sort it?

Chris, have you measured the MAF voltage at idle? Could be that it's rich because of the shape of the VQ table. At anything below a certain voltage, the VQ it gets is the same. That means you get the same amount of fuel below that voltage regardless. Can mod the table for you if necessary, but might be best to see if it really is the problem first!

For now I can do you a chip for single intake as requested, then see if that cures the problem first.

Have you chacekd all the stuff like throttle body synchronisation, air leaks, AIV operation, base idle setting etc?

Errrr no! LOL

The throttle bodies haven't been off so I assumed they'd be OK. I'll check.

What should the MAF voltage be and where do I measure it?

AIV's are removed.

It's idling at about 850-900prm is this what you mean?

The Doolz one. Do you have to tap a hose from one of the recircs to the air idle valve like you do with the JWT?

There's no mention of it but I wondered this myself.

No you don't. The hose was named the 'driveability mod' :)

I think all Z's need that to keep them on the road

Wasn't it to improve running at low revs though?

JD,

If you could mail me the file before the weekend it would really help.

Cheers.

Not too sure what it will be on a dual set up as the VQ curve is exponential until it flattens out. Can't remember what pin you measure it off now, but the maual should make it pretty clear. I'd expect ~0.4v or something like that. Idle is a bit high, should be 750, so maybe worth setting it properly. Having said that id still shouldn't hunt.

I'll get the BIN to you before the weekend, no probs.

Thanks John.

I'll find out which pin it is on the ECU, just wasn't sure if it was measured at the MAF.

Don't worry - this is just Chris being a dumb ass :D You must use the DoolZ chip with the DoolZ intake.... funny that init :D

Well there's other people using a Doolz without the Z1 chip and I've not heard of problems...

Prove it

 Here's the plan!

I'm trying to get it running with a basic chip so I can take it to SE or Thor to be fully mapped to my spec.

I didn't want to buy a U.S chip for $£$£$ and it not be set up for my mods and UK fuel.

I'll check with them how much they want but I'd rather buy something like an AFR to allow things to be easily tweaked.

If I have to put 2 MAF's on it's better than being confined to the Doolz supplied maps etc.

Does the HKS AFR compensate for dump valves like the Apexi S-AFC?

  • Author

Anyway I'm not even sure yet that it's the Doolz causing the problems.

There's loads of other stuff it could be causing it to hunt (Mike Hunt? :D)

I'll try the single intake when I've got the ROM and then I'll know.

That'll take some mapping. Best bet would be to use the DoolZ chip as a base and go from there ;)

Remember the MAS affects more than just fueling - it will also change timing etc so not the ideal tool to use for tuning IMO

The AFR does have anti stall yes! All it does is stop the MAS voltage falling below a preset value, no matter what the MAS is actually reading... :) Known as signal 'clamping' ;)

  • Author

OK so who else has bought a Doolz with chip and has 555's? :D ;)

Chris the 555 bit is irrelevant - thas easy enough to change ;) ANY DoolZ chip will do m8...

Forgot to say, you are a clever DICK :xxx: aren't you! ;) :D

Chris,

Have you mailed Z1 for their opinion? usually very helpful :)

Sorry, it won't work without a Doolz chip! :D

No need for a DoolZ setup on Mac's car - it has a MAP sensor so will NOT be affected by a true seperate intake system :p

LOL and yours is typing FORMAT C:

Hasn't srrae got a doolz setup?

Chris US petrol and uk are the same octane rating, they just use different scales of measurement.
