Got nicked for my number plate the other day, I know it a lot smaller then normal but is there any loop hole in the law as it is imported, :(

Featured Replies

It should not be a problem as Imports can have smaller plates UNLESS...........................

Your letters were spaced wrong or were the wrong style?

Style is right but the letters are spaced out a bit not by a lot but it reads A19 up u shall i just pay the fine or go to court???

Front, back or both??????????

some give £40-60 notes fine, fixed penalty

As for size, on a Jap import it is size to fit...ie: if the rear bumper has a place for a smaller square plate then it is ok to fit one....if it doesnt the a normal size has to go on :)

This is the same to the front plate aswell.....

on the front mate

Front, back or both??????????

For an import, it seems you can use the same sized letters they use on motorbikes, using the standard font.

I tried to get a smaller plate made up and emailed one of the dealers mentioned on here a while ago explaining that I wanted the smallest front plate possible using motorcycle sized letters and the legal spacing. They had 3 goes at it (emailing samples through to me) and not once did they produce a plate that had legal sized characters on it. :mac1:

They gave up in the end, I presume. :(

Hi Garry, I think the law stands that although its an import, its like everything else on the car that aint to our spec, it has to be changed to pass the MOT (reflectors, lights ect).Id pay up otherwise it could cost you alot more :(

I would pay the fine mate, I stand to be corrected but I think that the "loophole" exists for the situation where an import does not have a space suitable for a standard plate, ie the rear on a jap spec zed which needs a square plate rather than oblong. If you fit an aftermarket bumper, I would imagine it is your responsibility to fit one which will take a standard uk plate, especially as the standard front bumper (uk, jap and 99) will take a standard plate

Ok mate i will pay the fine but i am not changing the plate got enough holes in my bumper as it is :D

Could it not be argued that while a UK car comes with a bracket that a UK sized plate fits into, an import doesn't?

From what's been said, it looks like the problem is the spacing in this case though.

I will pay the fine £30

Did they give you a warning or a caution as well as the fine? If so and you continue to use the plate, you may get fined a lot more next time! Isn't the maximum fine for the offence £1000?

the ONLY way round it regarding imports is if the car doesnt have a European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval, which in the case of the zx doesnt apply as there is an equivilant uk model, and even then if there isnt one your number plate still must be certain size, you'll have to check dvla's site for the sizes, as the car didn't need a number plate for an sva test

it's your responsibilty

re you not getting another plate m8, if they get arsey they can remove your car from the road:(

Yes there are problems with smaller number plates, I've got one. The legislation is on the DVLA site, under regulations for imported cars. there was an argument suggested here that you caould say if you had a modified f/spoiler, that the normal size plate restricts air-flow for cooling the engine, Don't think the plod would like that one.

Geoff.

Watch out Sideshow with your ickle plate!

Shame you got a fine. I got nicked for wrong plates a few years back and they just gave me a 7 day notice to produce evidence that the plates had been corrected.
