Tried to fit a set of new rear pads to my Alfa 156 V6 last night and found the piston is stuck solid.

Tried it in a strong vice and it just will not budge.

I'm selling the car now the Z is almost back on the road so just want a cheap fix

You sure its jammed and doesn't need turning back in? If it has the handbrake on the caliper you will need to 'screw' the piston back into position... ;)

Sounds very painful but I'll give it a try

It does have the handbrake on the caliper but we tried all sorts and it didn't move a mm.

Yeah you need a caliper wind-back tool m8 ;) Halfords should have one :)

Thanks mate, I've ordered one.

As usual by the time i've bought all the tools I could have paid for them fitting lol

LMAO I know that feeling - what usually keeps me going though is knowing the fact that ONE DAY, I will be able to use it again... if I can ever find it that is :D

Oh and I really hope thats what your problem is too ;) LMAO

Well it makes sense that that's the problem as the handbrake mechanism is on there and the brakes have been fine recently.

I've needed one of these for a while but you can guarantee I'll never have to use it once I've got it

You could use it for spreading other imovable objects ;) Mac told me about it ;):D:D:D:rofl:

Helix I believe they are called. Rover 220 turbos and Nissan Maximas have the same sort of thing. I once did the brake on a 220 turb and it wasn't until I snapped a G-clamp that I realized that the piston turned. It had a big cross on the end so I just used a chivel head to turn it back in.

Have tried turning it with anything, you might find you dont need the tool!

Yes tried twisting it but wasn't really expecting it to work that way so didn't give it much effort

Got a tool being delivered from my local trade place for £15 so no great loss if it doesn't work and every time I do the Z pads I wish i had a proper tool for the job.

Duffer, you could use it to separate your head from your arse!

Thanks Mr Duff, worked a treat.

One side was dead easy but the one I thought was stuck was still very stiff even with my impressive tool :D

Excellent :D

Have been offered some nearly new Khans, with boots, off a 156, at handy money, to go on my everyday rover 827 but had a feeling they were 5 stud and my rover is 4. Oh well.

Cheers for that.
