Finally got round to bleeding the clutch at the weekend but I'm having problems getting the car into gear.

This is a manual conversion and I haven't got the car running yet.

Should I be able to put it in all the gears when the engine is off?

I can't get 5th or reverse and some of the others are a bit hit and miss.

The box worked fine off the car.

Clutch pedal still feels really spongy and only stiffens up when fully pressed.

You should be able to get into all gears when engine is off, maybe the linkage isnt lined up right or the clutch has air in the system?

should be able to get into gear without the clutch depressed with the engine off!

I can't really see how the linkage can be out of line - it's all held in place by the transmission and engine mounts etc and there's not much room for error.

If the clutch isn't disengaging would that stop it?

Most cars seem to go into gear without the clutch.

Maybe your box is goosed

I hope you didn't put a goose in it when you were under there last week. It took me ages to get rid of the goose honk last time

No the box worked smooth as anything off the car and seemed to go into gear before bleeding the clutch but i could be wrong.

go with mark on this, definately should be able to select all gears, no clutch required. Is it possible that someone has given the selector rod a knock and bent the gate?

Maybe there's not enough oil in it?

I've just had a new clutch and mine is reluctant to go into gear at higher revs or when rushed. Everything was fine before the clutch, so i assumed the self adjustment hasn't quite compensated for the new one. Also the biting point is very very low i.e. an inch from the floor, so i was going to try adjusting it with the nut above the pedal.

Maybe try this as well?

Did you install the shifter correctly ? (...or to put it differently: was the shifter handle the other way around when you were done ?)

it has a slight bend in it and when installed the wrong way it can cause the problems you describe.

Chris,

Have you bled it the old fashioned way, through all three bleed nipples that you have, then use the alto gizmo that you've got?

when i've done them in the past, I bled the old fashioned way, which got rid of most of the air in the system, then it needed a final push with the gizmo.

Ben.

Erm sorry but the gearbox won't ALWAYS go into every gear with the clutch engaged.

Chris, just wait till you get it running then you'll know for sure ;) Or do you like to sit in the car pretending to drive it and making engine noises? :D

:D That's what I've been doing for the last year

Lymon,

I was aware of the bend in the lever and when I first fitted it the lever was leaning towards the front of the car and seemed to be too far away in use.

I turned it round which made the lever vertical and easier to use.

I presume this is the correct way round and I'm sure it worked fine until the clutch was bled.

Ben,

Tried the easybleed kit thingy first but the top just popped off each time so went back to the method in the manual.

Hopefully it will be running this weekend so I'll find out.

P.S PaulC cheeky tw@t

Drop the pressure in your spare tyre that you're using! It only needs a little PSI!

  • Author

It said max 20psi on the bottle so I tried it at about 15 then 10 and it still did it  :(

I'll give it another go!

Yep - I blew the top of my reservoir with Ben's ezi bleed - fluid all over the show :-(

Those peeps with a really low clutch bite point, have a good look at your slave cylinder, mine had a slight leak and got gradually nearer to the floor. New slave and it was AOK.
