300 zx in Brum

Hi Guys,

Any guys in the Birmingham area heard of a jap import garage called Friends Automart by Winston Green Prison. Went to see a 300zx there this weekend which looked mint so I put a deposit down on it. As this is my first zx I was wondering if there is anyone local who knows about these cars and wouldn't mind looking over it for me. Any help would be appreciated.

Deano,

Where abouts are you based?

In Brum we have;

Me (Matty) in Coleshill

Jeff in Tamworth

Danny in Erdington

I'm quite sure one or more of us would come and take a shuffty at the motor your intent on buying.

Let us know when your off to look it over (would recommend a AA inspection too)

Am gonna be gettin one of those, one day...(sigh) :D

I enquired about an AA inspection and a RAC one. They both wanted around £300. They said with such a complex car they would test every thing, turbos, every circut compression, everything you can think off and it will take about 4 hours to do too.

They would not do a basic one for me. GITS.

the only experience i've had with one of those car inspections, like those provided by the aa and rac etc. was fairly negative.

the guy who did the inspection was a muppet. he just kept saying, i think that 'x' is ok, but i'd need to get it up on a hoist to be able to tell.

Or "the paints really thick on the bonnet - it might have had a respray or new bonnet" when the seller had already stated as much.

so in future, i'll be avoiding that kind of mechanical inspection in favour of taking the car in question to the nearest trustworthy garage or knowledgeable mechanic. because the report i had told me nothing i hadn't already worked out for myself.

just 'my 2 cents' as our american friends are so fond of saying.

Hi Matt,

We met at Trax this year if you remember I was with my brother.

Im based in Kidderminster and am looking into getting an RAC Inspection done on the vehicle although it is going to cost £300 on this motor. They do a lower priced inspection but not on an import.

Do you think it is worth it???

At the mo I am not planning to go back and see it until Saturday if you,re interested in taking a look then.

You can check out the motor yourself at

PS. Nice to here that you have decided to keep your Z mate.

Deano - that's a nice looking car (in the pics)... Thats an aftermarket exhaust BTW - just in case you didn't know that already wink.gif..

Since the chassis number is on the website, it can't hurt to run a chassis check on it.. Email the number to chassis@separts.co.uk and they'll check it out - make sure it comes back and matches up with what the dealer say your car is... (The details of what S&E will check is on http://www.separts.co.uk - choose News, then Chassis Check on the left)..

Dean - good speaking with you earlier today. Like I said (and Chromeless somewhere above this post), the RAC or AA mechanics are a bunch of over-charging nit-wits! I spent £300 on an AA inspection and received a crappy report with a few tick-marks here and there telling me that the car I was about to buy had several dings and scratches. Basically the guy kicked the tyres a few times, walked around it, declared it healthy and took off!

Again, my offer stands if you'd like me to go with you on Sat to have a look at the car and give it the once-over. Incidentally, my Zed which I got in early June, is also silver. Very nice and very rare colour.

Let me know mate!

Cheers!

Very nice - good luck on Sat.

Colonel Danny reporting back on recky status with Jeff this morning ....

Really liked the car but boy did we get pissed on ... Car looks and sounds good, needs some TLC PDQ but is in good nick otherwise.

Good luck with it Dean! and let us know when you are the proud owner.

Roger ... over .... and OUT!

Just to give an alternative view, I've found RAC inspections to be excellent. They are expensive but when I was looking for my Z, the first one I saw had bad accident damage which had been well covered up.

Even though I ended up having two inspections, they still paid for themselves as I was able to point out the things which the inspection had found and knock £800 off the price I'd previously agreed. And the best thing was the things that were wrong were all things I was planning to replace anyway (brakes & exhaust).
