so is there a seperate drum for the handbrake?

Look at the rear brake and you will notice it has a drum and disc.

Since the first one rolled off the production line.

What do you think your hand brake does?

Aye. tis true! And as you don't use the handbrake for stopping the car they rarely need replacing....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

The reason we have shoes and pads is;

Old disc systems used the pads as a hand brake. Metal expands as it gets hot and the you apply the hand brake to squeeze the pads on to the disc. As the disc cools down they shrunk meaning the pressure on the disc would be less and in extreme cases, the pads would no longer be incontact with the disc and the hand brake would be doing nothing.

Because drums have the shoes on the inside, as the they cool down the metal would shrink and acutally press harder against the shoes meaning the hand brake is on harder.
