Does anyone know how and what an E.G.R. control valve works and does? And what happens if it decides to go pop?

Is it easy to replace? Is it cheap? (What am I saying? this is a Z I’m on about, so I'd better get ready to sell two goats and my first born child!) Where is it on the engine, (any picture's would be good) and last of all, what does E.G.R stand for?

Thanks for any help. :)

EGR is Exhaust Gas Recirculation. its there for emission reasons.

it reduces NOx by lowering combustion temps by recirculating some exhaust gas back into the inlet manifold.

if it leaks then it may cause engine running probs & uneven idle

the car actually runs better without it!

Where is it and is it easy to get it off.

And is there any other item I could do withlout

Its right at the back of the engine. I dont know if it is possible to get it off with the engine still in.

If it sticks open it can cause rough idle as Paul says.

If it sticks closed it can possibly lead to some low load detonation. Never seen it happen when it's removed but it is a possibility.

I have searched a lot on the US forums and a few people have experienced det at low revs when the EGR is removed.

yeah, i did bring this up once before!! EGR works by lowering combustion temps, which also, as we know, helps prevent det! ;)

Yeah, wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that the maps are very lean in the areas when it's open. I added a bit more in that area on mine as a precaution. If you look at the knock maps I think that was nissans intention with the 'cut' into the closed loop area.

In America, people have failed emissons tests because of removing of the EGR. Would that be true of here too?

Mine passed the emissions test ok without the EGR connected :) And decat and and lol - how do you fail it?;)

They did say it was Californian smog testing which it failed on. I know people call the US for the amount of fuel they use, but some states have very strict emmisions laws.

no, as i said it is there for the reduction of NOx, which is not part of our emission test

My tick over is a little erratic at the moment, so it looks like it could have failed, but you can't get to it WITHOUT pulling the engine out?

Is this true? I hope not, there must be an easier way? Pete_shrimp, did you remove/disconnect it your self? If so could you post details of how it's done?

Cheers bud. :)

Pete's is disconnected because the solenoid that operates it was buggered, not the valve its self.

To check this, pull the line from the solenoid when the car is idling and suck on it. If the engine nearly dies then the valve is moving. If it makes no difference then it's stuck.

Californian emissions laws are monster these days - some parts of Z have California specific versions for this reason.

Presumably Arnie will be changing that so they can all drive APCs. :D
