I have a job interview tomorrow.

It's for the post of road test editor on 'Car' magazine!

I'm not sure I have much chance of getting it but you never know. Anyway...

Does anyone read 'Car' and have any thoughts about it?

I'd be interested in what you think of the mag and what you reckon a 'typical Car reader' thinks too.

What would really improve the road tests? Different cars? Different ways they're road tested? What other motoring mags do you like and why? What annoys you in magazines? Any thoughts on any motoring titles would be really, really, really useful.

Thanks folk

Good luck Craig. Sorry, I don't read CAR, in fact I don't read many car mags these days because I hate the whole 'Brand' thing that all journalists seem to subscribe to. They help OEM's push the myth that badge matters when it quite clearly does not (can you tell I crive a Nissan ;) )

Having said that, what a job, you jammy g1t.

BTW, I used to love CCC when it was alive, don't much like it's replacement, not enough spanners!

Agreed. It used to like the clinic (car clinic). I used to buy it religiously when all about me were buying Max Plastic, Fast Ashtray and the like.

Sorry Craig got carried away. Best of luck for your interview. All I can say is have you done plenty of research on the mag. They will certainly be asking questions. Hope ya get it.

I thought Car was a bit dry... and a bit up the industry's bum. Don't really get anything from it that you couldn't get from, say, reading the Driving section of the Sunday Times every week. OTOH that might be what the typical "Car" reader wants.

Evo is a fantastic magazine, and their road tests really give you a feel for what the car is like to drive. The "Car" tests always seem a bit like a copywriter has written them - not a driver.

The only exception is wossname, big lad with a beard, his articles are always good...

The people on here are probably not "Car" readers though, I don't think it was ever meant to appeal to the jap modification market!

Bet it's much harder work than it looks...

oh and good luck, forgot to say that in my other post. :x:

Under no circumstances should you turn your pockets inside out, whip out your knob and shout "Look out its an elephant!!!" halfway through the interview.

Because you do that at the beginning obviously  I always like to start every other sentence with the world Zebra myself, that always creates the 'right' impression :D

On Car magazine they'll probably ask "who makes that then?" "Is it a diesel?" :D

Ever seen that bit in Trainspotting with Spud?

Oh, so that's where I've been going wrong all these years

Seriously ( ), though I've only flicked through "Car" mag in Smiths if I'm bored so don't know too much about it. But a car-testing position on most car mags has to be a cool job and you can work your way up to "Evo" later....

Good luck, mate

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

How did it go Craig??

It went ok but I don't think I'll get the job.

There might be another job there they'll consider me for. Road test editor is not a good position for someone who hasn't worked in car journalism before.

Oh well, looks like I'll be staying put for the monet (I'm currently on a bike mag so it's a decent job ... I just fancied changing to cars).

Thanks for the help though.

It IS a bit dry, 'Car' isn't it? I didn't think 'Evo' was much better but lots of people seem to think it is.

I'm not a huge fan of Evo either, again they tow the corporate line. I like mags to buck the trend, go against the grain. We get bombarded by so much corporate BS these days it's nice to loose yourself in a mag for half and hour and imagine others think the same way, and that someone is organised enough to do something about it, or at least write about it.

Club does it for me ;)

Glad to see you appreciate the arts, didn't realise he painted bikes.

Seriously though, you might have done OK, it is hard to tell straight out of interview how well it went, you only ever remember the worst bits. Either way, I'm sure more oportunities will present themselves.
