Just refitted the engine after a pair of 2nd hand heads and turbos. Been assured that the heads are from an auto, same as mine and were nice and quite before breaking. Car is all rebuilt, new platty plugs, oil flushed and replaced with Magnatec, new filter etc

Car has not been driven as yet, only started and all the niggly bits sorted out, but here comes the problem !!!!!

Helluva tappet rattle  Been advised to drive it and the tappets will fill with oil and pressurise, but it goes against the grain to drive something that doesnt sound right. Double checked the timing marks and it seems ok, pressure test each cylinder and thet pan out at around 150/ 160 psi each cylinder.

Will i fook it by driving it for a test run ???

Any help will be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers,

Alan.....

i wouldnt drive it if its that noisey!! run it up at about 2krpm & get it hot. if alls ok the noise should go.

have you checked the oil pressure??

are the hydrolic tappets set up correctly, if so they should fill up in short time

  • Author

Oil pressure is half way up the gauge when cold and drops slightly to 2 when at normal operating temp, all on tickover.

What are the tappets meant to be when set up correctly ??

I assumed that if the heads were allright on the donor car they would be allright to go straight on to my car ??? Or am I missing summit ??

Cheers for the feedback, I will not be beat and will fix this !! :D

Alan

Did you try what Paul said ?.

There' s probably jsut no oil in the heads.

Give it a few minutes for the oil to flow around and then see if it gets any better.

Yup,

Tried that and no joy

Thought that if it was running at normal temp for 10 mins or so it would sort it out, but no, still a tappety rattle

Al

Do it, no dont listen to me i know nothing.

is it definately coming from the top of the engine? It's not what JeffTT posted about last week was it? Are you usuing a genuine Nissan oil filter?

  • Author

100% its the top end. Filter that was in it was a Jap filter, its an import car, and it done it. Changed the oil & filter, Fram filter and it is still the same ??

is the oil pump working

  • Author

changed it to what ??

Bear in mind, the engine is just put back together and not been run on the road yet.

Magnatec, I wouldnt put that in me lawnmower. Go buy some Carstrol RS 10/60w or mobil 1 Motorsport 15/50w. Millers do a nice 10/60w aswell.

While I am not doubting the benefits of good oil, What is puzzling me is why are the tappets not pressurising ??

are all of them noisy or is it just 1 or 2?? is it a specific bank??

how long were the heads off the donar car ??? it is possible that the heads could have been turned up side down etc meaning that the oil will drain from the lifters which means they will probably be fooked and unable to fill with oil

does it idle okay

why random statement

  • Author

Al of them sound to be noisy, although with the old trusty stethoscope screwdriver, the right bank appears to be the worse. She idles ok but sometimes cuts out after you rev her. Dont know how long the heads were off the donor car unfortunately, but they were upsaide down to get the old head gasket cleaned off.

were the tappets out of the old heads?? if they were, & the heads had been off for a long time they could be siezed if moisture has got into them

  • Author

nope,

heads were lifted off the donor car complete with cams etc and refitted right onto my engine after the old gaskets had been scraped off.
