Gonna have a go at a knackered one first, any advice?

solder sucker, a decent soldering iron and a bit of solder.

 

Maplin do a kit with a temp adjustsable iron, stand and sucker for about £40.

A non temp adjust iron is about £15 for a decent one, and about £5-10 for a suckeroo.

small pair of snips for cutting the old one out and a small pair of long nose pliers to remove the legs still stuck in the board.

aye, long nose pliers with a good point on em are particularly handy at loosening the old chip from the board tho

LMFAO :rofl: :rofl: :rofl: :rofl: :rofl: :rofl: why the fvcck would you want to keep the old chip??????? just cut it out, its the quickest way rather than trying to desolder the fooker and possibly end up lifting the pads off the board..... especially if you have no experience which by the sounds of it Mark doesnt!!!

Mark one bit of advice , even if you have cut the legs be careful as you can still fook the tracks lifting the old chip out because of the gloop Nissan cover the chip in to protect it

Yep, you can soften it a bit with some acetone. Good for cleaning flux off too.
