Have i done summat bad?

Went on holiday last week and decided to disconnect the battery whilst i was away. Came back and went for a spin, then when sat in traffic out of the corner of my eye i saw smoke in my side mirror. Though ahhhh cars on fire so pulled in and jumped out to see. Smoke (White i think and very smelly) was coming out of my passenger side exhaust. Now when i picked up the car 6 weeks ago the oil level was twice what it should be and it smoked a bit for the first week from the drivers side exhaust. There is still too much oil in her (1-2cm over the max level on warm) but there was no smoking problems before i went away. Does this sound like a temporary problem or have i wrecked my car. Also took off the fuse box cover and hey presto no relay thingy for the sub fan? Would this be a bad think (got one on order from nissan now)

id do an oil & filter change & PCV's at the very least

are you loosing coolant/overheating?? is there any sludge in the oil filler cap/radiator??

Its a jap spec TT Auto without a cat. Oil needs a change hasnt overheated which is a suprise as the sub fan doesnt work and im sure that cant be good. The water is a real rusty colour. What the PCV where do i find em and how much to replace?

The fan has 2 relays, the main one & the sub one

PCV valves are for the breather system. theres one either side of the upper plenum. also replace the hoses to them & 2 others at the front. they are fairly cheap.

Whats the fan you can see if you look through the gap in the front spoiler?

Ive never seen that one move.

Can you buy those bits in the UK (PCV Hoses) or are they an expensive nissan only part?

You may find due to the high oil level its seeped into the turbo or out of the engine and now you burning it off - wait and see how it goes, but try to get the oil level down to the right mark - its not a good thing to be overfull because of the increased oil pressure can lead to seal fails.....

Really overfilled oil could get splashed by the crankshaft up the cylinder bores and possibly back up the turbo oil drains when cornering... like Bilky says... drain it to the correct level dont burn it off.

Yeah - just undo the drain bolt on the sump and let a load come out - then top it back to the right level. Simple.

Speaking of which what is the right level? everytime I service mine with oil filter change I do 4ltrs, but I heard it's only supposed to be 3.5lts recently?

Another thing actually, (not that I am hijacking the thread its all on the same subject) every turbo specialist I spoke to recomends to use semi synthetic in our cars as the engine wasnt meant to run on fully, and fully can just cause problems, any one else heard of this one?

Anyways, I drop the oil every 6mnths, and this time I used 10w40 semi, last time i used 10w40 magnatec.

Should be just under 4litres with the filter change..... :)

Fully synth is always best for turbo applications owing to the excess heat generated. Fully synth can cause problems if used for the first time in a high-ish mileage engine. Some people say that when using fully synth for the first time to change the oil again after 1000 miles or so, as the synth oil loosens up loads of crap and deposits in oilways etc.

As for the engine being "designed for semi-synth" that is rubbish. Oil technology is improving all the time (plus fully synth was available in 1990 anyway  ) so as long as viscosity is right you'll have no probs.

I'd say 90% of us here use fully synth in our Zeds......can't all be wrong...!

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

IMO synthetic oil is a waste of money when most of us change it every 3000 miles or so anyway!

a good quality semi synthetic is more than enough!

car not smoking anymore but loss of boost after about 20 minsand ticking sound from engine on idle, switch off and back on, no ticking and boost back. i assume this is what u guys mean by detting. what the f**k do i do now. would the fact that i have no sub fan relay be the problem. after a long run in hot weather in my wifes citroen, when i switch the engine off i can hear a fan going, but not on my car. it that the sub fan. also had water dripping out the passenger front end, it was warm water but noticed i had too much in there, so i guess it was overflow, though i did hear gurgling from the rad whilst this was happening
