Just been browsing the 300zxclub.com forums, and a couple of the yanks over there are currently playing with fabbing up single throttle intake manifolds

Thing that got me thinking tho, they rekon thats a SERIOUS bottle-neck on our beloved motors, and a STBI will allow you to free up like 10%!!!

10% sounds a bit optimistic to me, but even so, theres gotta be a LOT of potential in it.

Heat soak is one thing that sprung to mind, theres a fair bit of metal in that standard manifold, and it sits ALL the way across the top of heads, heat coming up from turbos...air passing through that must re-heat back up a good degree or 2 at least.

2nd thing that sprung to mind was inlet length, a STBI in the middle of the engine would shorten the inlet a fair bit too, drop lag a fraction :)

Main drawbacks i can see tho are getting it under the bonnet, plumbing 2 turbos up (though a FMIC with 2 ins and 1 out?), all the vaccum points and then the coil packs.

I don't think the throttle bodies are an issue until you get to ~5-600bhp.

There are lots of other things you can stress about before you need to start worrying about the TBs. Such as the IC's and the pipework to and from them, turbos, injectors...

I *think* the S13 has the same bore TB as the the zed, but only 1 obviously but there are 450bhp S13's with the stock TB. Admittedly changing it will make a difference by that stage of tune, but I can't see it being too beneficial on a moderately tuned Zed, it won't hurt though either.

PeterR @ Nisstek Is designing this too, with a bit of luck I will be getting rid of my plen this year  :hyper:  :hyper:

whoops, yeah i meant to say about the power figures, useless

one guy is about to fit the one hes made and take it to a dyno to test the difference, quite interested on what it produces..i think his current power is around the 500 mark.

thing is, if it works that well, they were talking about selling them for ~$1000, thats about the same as a honed up plenum from Stillen, ok so ya gotta get a FMIC and stuff too, but if you are running high enough power to need one, then chances are you have a FMIC or something already.

Mmmm yummy. :)

Will the bonnet shut?

yep I've been following Tom's post on this. They are still trying to get it to fit under a stock hood at the moment.

There are talks of machining the lower plenum, but no one seems keen to do this.

droool, can imagine that in the flesh, well, metal :) Very nice that would look too sat in the engine bay

yup, though from what ive seen of the lower plenum, i think machining that would cause more problems, youve got the idler for a start, and the knowledge i have about intakes, it seems to be fairly well designed.

one thing that always seemed with the Z32 is that they designed the engine around the car, the front of the car being very shallow, kind of an 'oh bugger, we need intake on there yet, lets spread it all over the top and make it fit."

It looks real good, but i always thought it was restrictive for high power applications. :(

Jezz.......... you missed the point ;) You make one of these 'cause they look sexy

That is the 265mph Jun record car........ as someone said about the bonnet........ errrrrrr nothing a lump hammer won't fix :D

--------> is phoning sheet aluminium suppliers so i can get started on fabricating me one up................ lol

Rob.

Yeah they are sexy alright. LOL :D

JD, if you're reading this, looks like someone's either been reading your mind or bugging our phones! ;) :)

Custom made intake manifold and single throttle body...a VERY good idea...;)

looking at the various design for these they dont solve the problems caused by the intake for the back cylinders being longer. Would like to see a centre fed intake with "tuned" lengths to each cylinder, again the problem would be how to fit it into the car. Bonnet scoop in a supercharger stylee, anyone??

mmmmmmm yum, throttle bodies with trumpets! :D though no good for Turbo :(

Decent turbo plenums have trumpets in them. :)

Just a shame you can't see them. :(

really? ive never heard of that, shame you cant hear the trumpets too, like a Dragon roaring in a cave :D

Yeah, my mate had a superb one for his S13, was something like £700 but was a work of art.

Can't find any pics of it now though. :(
