I know a few of you guys have gone down this road and sorted things out and I want to do the same before the bad winter and having to slam my brakes on yesterday on the M25.

1. is it possible to tell if your disks are warped just by looking at them or line up a staight surface against the surface of the disk?

2. what and where are the bushes that wear out. Can you easily tell if they are worn and how difficult are they to change?

Thanks

Vijay

Group buy on disc brakes , dont miss out,

warped discs give you a vibration through the steering at certain speeds.

Just a quickie on the brake disc front!

When I got mine from Phuong on Monday there were instructions from Stillen about bedding in the pads and discs. One important thing I noticed was they say not to keep your foot on the brakes when you come to a stop from speed or sudden braking.

Leaving the pad surfaces in contact with the discs when they are so hot can overheat that area of the disc which can cause warping.

They recommend taking the car out for a run and braking gradually from speeds of about 20-30 mph over a few miles. Repeating this procedure about ten or fifteen times to bed the pads and new discs in properly.

Might explain how I warped those discs I had on my Supra a few hundred miles after I got them.

Nice one Timmy seems to make alot of sense.

So this is it.... Timmys single contribution to the forum,

I shall remember that thanks biggrin.gif

Ajay,

The best way to check, for sure if the disc is warped is with a dial guage and check for run out.

As for the bushes, I think that you're talking about the suspension tie arms, try this link:

Hope it helps.

Tim

PS Total Bill for Bushes was 50.54 all inc.

Vijay,

I spent over £300.00 on new disks and pads and then had them skimmed a few hundred miles later only to find it was the tension rod bushes had gone at only £45.00!

Without taking the disks off and measuring them to very fine tolerances or getting them skimmed I don't know how you can know.

I think the bushes are graphite filled so you may find they have leaked - mine failed the MOT and I ordered em from Z Centre.

Tim and Chris,

Were they difficult to fit?

Vijay

Vijay,

Check the link on my previous post but, no they're not too difficult to fit, bit tight but no real probs. - We are talking about the bushes aren't we?

Tim

Warren...

LOL

Stu,

Warren is the man to speak to about discs.

If the tie-bars have gone you may notice the wheel has been wearing on the wheel arch liner at the front. Have a look at the bars which go forwards from the wishbone and where they attach to the car there is a massive bush - about 2 inch diameter!!! If the car has done any serious miles (>60/70k) then I'd replace em anyway - they are a bit of a bitch to get the old bushes out but nothing major compared to most jobs on a zed.....

yep Andy, they have been rubbing on the liner, but I just presumed it was cos I've got 18's on the front. What page are they in in the workshop maunual? I'm up for changing them myself, but am just paranoid about getting everything undone and then buggering it up.......my z's done around 65k.

Have you ever seen a write up anywhere? (can't get into tt.net at the moment)

Cheers

Vijay

Hi Vijay,

Page on ttnet is http://www.ttzd.com/tech/tensionrodstech.html is you can get it smile.gif

Not sure what page in the manual - piss easy job to remove the bars though - two bolts through wishbone, one through other end (through the bush).

You'll need to take the front section of the liners out as well but this is fairly simple and you can pull all the dirt out while your there wink.gif If I can dig out the details from the manual I will.

Did you get the tail light conversion done in the end btw???

my car should be going into Luke's to everything done pretty soon.........I hope.

I got the actual lamps from a breakers for £90 in the end. You better change your number if I get round to doing these bushes, cos you know I'm gonna phone you if I get stuck!!!! (lol)

Vijay

I got my local garage to fit them and he said he had no probs at all.

These bushes are the size of a tennis ball and they feel rock solid so you would need a strong vice or press to push them into the rods.

Bt the way, Nissan can only supply the bar with bush at £125.00 per side!

Vijay,

I have a spare set of stock discs in my garage, you can try'em on if you want?

Then you'll know what the problem is. I bet it's those tension bar bushes!

I bet its the bushes too - the question is whether the steering wheel wobbles or tries to break your wrists - if its the wrists then I'd say deffo bushes! wink.gif

Is there any major benefits on getting the adjustable tension rods over just the bushes?

Vijay

Vijay I dont know how the factory silocone bushes ever got out of the nissan factory, they are shite!!!.

The rose jointed tension rods give a much more positive feel through the steering and hard braking, you can even ajust your wheelbase with them, and the silly thing is they are around the same price as the factory shite!!!

"Is there any major benefits on getting the adjustable tension rods over just the bushes?"...

Yes, the Stillen ones go nice and rusty if you like that look. Peronsally I would only go for the replacement bushes, unless you have an alignment problem... if only I knew at the time!

(from www.suspension.com)

Jez.

Hi jez

Got mine from SE been fitted for 8 months no rust yet.

IMO its just another thing to adjust wrongly. At the end of the day the suspension was designed to work properly on the car the way it is.... unless you are racing the thing I can't see the need in tweeking the front suspension blah blah blah...

Just my opinion but.....

CheerZ,

Andy

Vijay, you have mail m8 wink.gif

CheerZ,

Andy

Andy me old matey as you well know the factory silocone shite filled bushes split.

when you opt for rose jointed there is no nasty silocone to drip all over, and even more so with your 330mm brems see how long they last. the difference is amazzzzzzing ask Johnny grasshopper good times man.

Ian, I got the poly bushes form the Z center wink.gif The bigger brakes actually destroyed the OEM bushes which just shows how good they really are biggrin.gif

CheerZ,

Andy
