I see that MJP are flogging Mongoose exhausts for £450 + VAT. I know a couple of people here either have or had these exhausts, any opinions ?

I know that Hairsy's motor, with a few other mods, was knocking out 432 bhp, so they can't be much of a restriction. Are they well made, reasonably quiet (without being boring) and value for money, or is there something much better in a similar price range ? I'll probably also be junking the cats at the same time ...

Just a thought, what diameter tubing is the Mongoose exhaust ?

Hi Andy,

I have a Mongoose on my car. Inside the car it sounds very quiet, but that might me Zs in general. At idle it has quite a low rumble which I think sounds very good with out being over the top. It has a more throaty sound at higher revs.

Dont know exactly what diameter piping it uses. But I do know that they use some procces to keep the diameter constent through the bends of the piping. IE it doesnt pinch as other pipes do when you bend them. This keeps the air flow nice and clear.

Hey up And,

BlitZ mate, nuff said! Mongoose sounds good, but I will continue to promote BlitZ...mainly coz I've spent enough to have shares in the company LMAO!

Knackered after Thursday, excellent laugh though, must do it again SOON!

CheeZ bud,

Timski-T soon to be Twin Tub again!

;-)

I have mongoose and I'm happy with them. performance wise I do not know how they compare, but then again for the price they are probaby the best value for money.

I love their sound.

I hate sport cars with a stupid loud noise (BoyRacers!). The mongoose sounds good from inside and outside and when I accelerate they sound very very satisfying without sounding stupid (difficult to describe) smile.gif

This friend of mine has a nice moded Supra but I think he ruined his car when he fitted this massive exhausts that make more noise then a pneumatic-hammer!! The louder the sound the slower the car feels/look

My little opinion smile.gif

i have mongoose as well, and i am very happy with it.

when i bought mine, i wanted something i could travel up and down the motorway with without getting a headache, but would give a nice noise when needed

you get a nice rumble at low revs, and nice rasp when giving it some, but keep a constant speed, and you harldy know it's there wink.gif

and looks nice and subtle compared to single exit boxes....

Have you guys still got the Cats ? I would expect them to deaden the noise a little. Also, do you get any mid-range reasonance, I know that quite a few stainless systems suffer from this.

I still have the CATs in mine.

Cant say I have noticed any reasonance.

I would like to have the cats removed from my one, but whey I asked how to do it, I had the piss taken out of me frown.gif

So if anyone knows how I do this, tell me

Easy - get 2.5" pipes that replace them.

You may also have a pre-cat too. Mine is a late '92 and inexplicably it hasn't.

I also have a late 92 on a K plate reg Dec 22 92, uk spec car. Mine had the pre-cats soon got rid of those and the main ones as well. You get a bit more response from the turbo's without the pre-cat. The pre-cat was replaced with a one piece down pipe that replaced the main cats.

That Mongoose sounds pretty good value, if I have any money left over from my engine re-build I may have to buy a pair.

'Engine rebuild', that sounds ominous. It's a definite now is it ?

My experience with other cars and removing CATs is that they deaden the sound a *lot*.. Certainly did on my Renault (Andy already knows how loud that is.. Although I was very sedate leaving the other night given that you could hardly see 50ft at points!)..

Mongoose certainly do have a good reputation.. And I believe the process Stuart was referring to is mandrel bending..

That the one Az.

My friend explained it to me a while back. For got the name of it.

I was very happy with my Mongoose although I really doubt that there is a huge performance difference between the various pipes. I have seen some differences in build quality - I would put the Mongoose above average but not in the Blitz league.

Noise-wise, removing the cats does make a noticeable difference but it's not by any means unbearable in my experience on the Z.

Dave

Dave I totally agree, my mongoose is great and you wont find anything as good for the money.

Anyone else got Apexi? Apparently way too loud with the cats off but I like how it sounds with them on. No resonance. The 5" tips are a bit OTT and the big stainless steel polished cans. Still I'm very attached to it now.

Hi Stuart. Got some pictures of when I gutted mine a couple of months back.

The first one is looking down the end of the pipe, where you can see the honey-comb style CAT material.

In the second shot, I've made a few holes with a very long 18 inch, masonary drill bit. From here, continue drilling until its all broken up. Make sure you pull out everything! And, yank out the wire mesh stuff that holds it all in place. One word of advise, pour some oil / water over the CAT material, otherwise it kicks out loads of dust. I'm sure it cant be good for lungs!

Az,

I'm sure the Cat does deaden the sound a lot (your R19 has a nice healthy rumble!), but I think the turbo's will too, so the end result may not be too unsociable.

Are there any pics of the mongoose on this site? If not, are they single or double tail pipes on each end ?

Good point Andy - I must have had my brain switched off when I wrote that smile.gif Cars with turbo's will always be quieter (considerably) than an N/A with no CATs..

Still loud, just probably not annoyingly loud..

BTW I do quite like the Mongoose, but I prefer the way the Remus tips look...

Stage: Rather Ill

Hi Andy

I have a mongoose on mine and it is great. The sound was not too loud when I had the cats on my car. Once I had those removed it gave the mongoose a nice deep sound but still not too loud. Just enough to sound like a sports car should!!. Good value, good quality go get one.

Seez ya!

AndyP, before buyinh(eventually), give a call to Grasshopper, (johnny). Contacts are in the link-uk-companies on this site.

I got mine from him and at that time he was able to do the best price for it... as long as you say you are from 300zx.co.uk club smile.gif

Thanks all, especially for the reference to GPS - I didn't know that Johnny dealt in these. I shall compare prices. I suspect the shipping might even it out a bit, as MJP are only 20mins drive for me.

Cheers Simon (WillyEd)

But how do you get the that stage so you can start drilling. I have never understood where the CATs are on my car, and thus have no idea what to take off

How long did it take you?

Stuart, the cats are under the drilled heat shield on your car - have a look and you'll see what I mean wink.gif

Andy, I got the HKS Hiper Muffler from Johnny a few months back and am *WELL* impressed. The note is deep but not too loud and then you give it some.... nice raspy note (ask Matty aka Topsquads wink.gif) but again not too loud - the car is easily driveable on the motorway with only wind noise biggrin.gif No kidding smile.gif Give the ginger one a call on 01942671239 and he'll be able to get those cams he wanted biggrin.gif

CheerZ,

Andy

Muwhahahahahaha, what a crap exhaust (oh god what am i letting myself in for)

By the way whos white car is that craig?

its so clean, cant be yours. biggrin.gif
