Just listening to Oasis performing Daytripper live, just summat that I downloaded whilst staying at me Bros while he was on his hols.

What gets me is this, will we ever, ever have a band that will reach the heights that the Beatles or the Stones created back in their day?

What with Pop Idol etc. seems to me that nowadays it's all commercial. I do love Oasis and to me personally they are the last of a dead breed of true rock and rollers! Yeah I know they have taken the p1ss by using Abba chords and claiming to have not copied the Beatles at every mile marker...but...

Will a new breed of bands/solo artists ever be worthy of holding the best band in the world title? Shame! We live in such a commercial world when it comes down to the music scene! IMHO!

Your views much appreciated as ever...

no we wont, beatles, stones, pistols all broke social boundaries as well as musical ones.

I don't think that it wil happen in the UK/USA or other liberal nations again, it may happen in some of the more controlled states/countries. but we probably wont hear about it.

The Beatles are simply the finest band ever. The music and songwriting has inspired modern bands like Oasis and will be forever. Will people really be talking about the likes of Oasis (who I really like by the way!!), in say 20, 30 or 40 years time....I think not

John Lennon is a musical LEGEND and I think god has got his ratios wrong. I mean how can you let a genius like John Lennon get shot, and allow a cretin like Des O'Connor to live??.....I mean!!!! :xxx:

The Abbey Road and Sgt Pepper albums are 2 of the best albums EVER, bar none!!!! :)

Nobdoy who has emerged in the last 30 years+ has had anywhere near the impact of the Beatles. They were the first and the last of their generation and will "live forever" in the minds and genre of pop music.

Dont forget the who

music & groups are only legendary & classic if you like it.

I personally think all those bands are a load of shite that play dull depressing crap

cheeky girls anyone??!! LMAO!!

Tim did your mum never tell you that people who's eyebrows join in the middle are evil :D

The Beatles are just a boy band... but they were the first boy band. Problem is you can only be first once so no-one else will be as popular or notorious.

There's still originality out there but it's all so much more diverse now... not if you listen to the charts, but with singles sales as low as they are the charts are hardly relevant.

The Chemical Brothers, for instance, spawned an entire new genre single-handed

Never really liked the Beatles, but I like a lot of their songs when covered by others (that's other artists who can sing, not Boyzone or any plop-idle tw@t).

Lennon & McCartney knew how to bash out a tune and there will probably never be anyone like that again coz this world has slipped down the U-bend :(

The Stones are still good..........

Whilst on the subject of the greats, what about Queen. Best rock band ever

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I agree, I went to the '86 concert at Wembley. Simply the best live concert I've seen bar none and Freddie Mercury, what a performer. :D

Cool

I missed the Knebworth gig in '86, I was returning from hols that day and my flight was delayed  (was cutting it fine, though :( )

Still regret that, as I never got the chance to see them again

Oasis were the boll0x for me at Reading in 2000...I know and appreciate that they will never rock along the same road as Freddie but they were top class!

I think Festivals are the best place to see yer fav bands, I think it cost us about 80 squids for the whole weekend and it was brilliant!

My Aunt is off to Donnie this weekend I think, cracking line-up! Metallica on the Sunday...quality!

PMSL this end! :)

The Beatles were summat special, but I must admit I never really got the Stones thing. Admittedly they did knock out a few good tunes, but certainly not 40 years worth !

I agree the Stones were overrated...Beatles were superb songwriters. There have been many songs written since which are as good as Beatles classics, but the amazing thing about the Bealtes is the number they wrote in a fairly short time.

They were the first quality catchy melody writers and rode the crest of a wave (they reflected and amplified strong feelings at the time in society) which helped them believe in themselves and achieve great things. Abba and the Bee Gees followed them as quality songwriters with significant output of song which last. They had such impact because they were the first, but the songs (mainly middle-late period) have lasted because they have classic quality. People hearing them for the first time can really appreciate them even now.

What about U2? They're class & have knocked out loads of great songs. I heard that the song 'One' was voted the best song ever!
