Has anyone got a Radar/Camera/laser/Ba$tard detector?? I've just got my first EVER 3 points and DON'T want to get any more!! I need one that'll recognise european ones too and that is easy to transfer from one vehicle to another.

Any suggestions...???

Cheers, G.... :)

Bell 550 I think is a very good one. Good at detecting lots of different types of cameras.

Dont forget that radar detectors are illegal in lots of european countries and there are heavy penalties if found with one.

I've got one ok if you just over the limit, but if your having fun not enough warning for the breaking distance needed 100-150 yards

ive had a few and the best yet is the road angel

which i currently use, the bell 550 picks up false alarms ie garage doors

security lights unless you take out that band, the road angel, gives no false alarms, and picks up all the fixed/mobile/specs and warns of blackspots

not sure about europe, not used it there yet, first 12 months is free

then its £49 per year £79 for two or £99 for life for the updates

which downloads new cameras into your unit, you can set it for 250 500 or 1000 metres, easy transferrable between cars, you can even programme your own warnings into it, ie duck if your on the pull and going past your house lol

i paid close to £400 for mine and its down to about £330 ish now, BEST £400 i ever spent m8

(only one thing to warn about if your car has a heated front screen it may need an attachment, zx is ok;) )

Problem with GPS based systems, they wont alarm you to mobile sites, pigs sat on bridges with radar guns, or hidden in their van on a layby

Very happy with my Bel Euro 550 - you can disable frequencies that you know are false alarms (eg: automatic door openers in petrol stations  ) but I recommend only doing this when you've had the unit for a while and you are sure that the frequency concerned is not used by the law...

Great when you go abroad, as you just change the country on the unit and it sets itself for the local frequencies used.

Ive got Bel Euro 550 too, it picks up Gatso's quite well but you shouldnt really need it for them anyway , although its good to know which ones are live or not.

Main reason i have it is for mobile laser traps, saved me a couple times now, detects laser from as far as you can see ahead .

I think a jammer aswell is the best way to go though.

Cheers,

actually it does m8, now has a Laser Alert module that works by picking up the scatter from quite a long distance away, not sure how it would work if you were the first bugger it was pointed at lol

touch wood ive used this in my jag and now the zx and given both some serious clog, and up to now has been a life saver, again as for the europe bit im not sure, so maybe best doing some research before buying, as cybernet states the BEL EURO obviously does do abroad, theres loads of sites that do comparisons, so decide which is best for you

btw one thing ive always like about the road angel, as you enter some roads with cameras, a lot of detectors will start warning, the road angel knows what side of the road its on

Never mind detectors laser road angel whatever. You have absolutely no chance against a well sited laser system on a tripod aimed at the crest of a motorway hill from a bridge half a mile away. Guess how I know?

You crest the hill at private test track speeds with your GPS telling you what the speed really is and guess what? you are nicked in half a second even though you are sharp on the brakes the very second you see the bridge in the distance with the van on top. And the NIP confirms the GPS dead on.

Your only hope is to always crest motorway hills or bends below the "your nicked" speed or invest in a device to jam laser and perve the course of justice. But then you might need one front and rear and risk the not inconsiderable cost of perving the course of justice.

The laser gets you with a narrow beam up to nearly a mile away. You could always paint the car matt black and have a liquid crystal blackout on the front number plate it targets though. Or just watch the speed. Its game over now.

and as for you guys that break the rear spoiler doing custodial sentence speeds. Methinks there wont be much more of it except on runways.

sorry m8, your arguement doesnt add up

if the police had it pointed at the crest of a hill half a mile away and it was transmitting the gps would pick it up before you got there,

that isnt the way the police work, to clock over that distance it would have to be on a tripod, and as you rightly point out, they have to clock your reg, so they can only point at one lane, so you come over a hill doing 130mph in middle lane, theyre pointed at outside lane you would assume?

3 cars in 3 lanes come over the hill all doing 130mph, who is it pointed at?

ive always found its always its given me plenty of warning,

and the link you've posted ,read the reviews of the gps/radars on that very site;)

no system on its own is 100%, but i would rather have it than not

anyone driving on the motorway or any road for that matter, and who is not

constantly aware of what is or may happen probaly shouldnt be behind the wheel

I've had a Bell Vector Long Range for a few years now...very good...

Just got given a Speed Cheetah to test for the shop, is a replacement rear view mirror with a radar detector built in, seems to be an excellent product, so good in fact that I'm not going to be giving it back!

ive had a few and the best yet is the road angel

The ROAD ANGEL is superb and it's upgradable to keep up with the various technologies. :D

No points for me (yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) ;)

I use a Snooper S6-R LD system and it's excellent, not many false alarms from the detector and the GPS is spot on, however if you want 'full' protection then look at the Origin Blue II, not only does it have Laser/radar detector and GPS but there is also a jammer add-on (although I can't find reference to this now on their web site, maybe there is a fine line between what is a safety tool and what is evasion. But is was defianetly offered as an option, I take it back.. listed on their site: Unit ready for optional laser diffuser). The legality of the use of laser jammers is questionable, but then so is the use of any detector; if i remember correctly the law goes along the lines of...

It is legal to own and use a laser/radar detector but you are not allowed to act upon the information supplied by it!

as for jammers; you are into the realms of perverting the course of justice, but then if the BIB are on a bridge and you're blasting along a m/w then he has to stop you to investigate the fact that you are using a jammer device, and most garage door openers use similar technology. ;)

It was on a tripod and it was aimed at the crest of the hill and the middle lane and guess who was in it? That is exactly the way these smart chappies were working. The traffic was light so the middle lane was the place to be. Only lucky that it wasnt too over the top on speed. There is no way a laser detector can detect through hills so they have you the moment you come into view with no warning. Not very sporting was it but there it is. I use a detector and normally am very well behaved. A jammer might have saved the day but they also had a chase car on the bridge ready to chase down real ravers and possibly jammer suspects. No doubt they also had a very good piccy of the driver as you drive under the bridge. They claimed they had the video frames with the evidence. The GPS mentioned was a handheld palm being used in the car at the time to check the speedo. The stoopid things one does in a car! Anyway the GPS and the NIP were bang on agreement. Even though the brakes went on immediately not 1mph was wiped off before being got.

I am just confirming that there are some circumstances you cant beat. This isnt hearsay.

I hope you were overtaking somone otherwise you deserve what you got. There is NOTHING more infuriating than a middle lane hogger!

Everything else you say is spot on, the BIB are not there to premote safe driving or to maintain driving standards they are there to collect revenue for the chancellor's coffers. They will adobt the best position and location they can to 'charge' the greatest number of motorists.

Tim

Yup. was overtaking and I share your views on middle lane hoggers and dont myself. Still dont feel I deserved it but was lucky to be just below an appearance. I had been wanting to find out where a true ton was but now I dont care - wont go there again! at least on that road;) Heck it was for less than a minute. How many do it for hour after hour and get away with it? Have they all got cloaking devices? Its a lottery!

If you want the ultimate detector then you will want to get yourself a Snooper S4 Neo. I got one a couple of months back and its awsome. Like the Road Angel it is a GPS unit, but where it is superior is that it also has a built in 360 degree laser detector so you are safe guarded from all the mobile sites aswell.

The only think it wont pick up is radar but seeing the only things that uses radar nowadays is traffic signal cameras then you don't really need to worry about that.

Pop down to Halfords and take a look at it. It's a must have in a car like a Zed!

Justin

Hi Justin

Regarding the laser detector on the S4, where is it located? Is it obtrusive and therefore likely to make a traffic cop unsympathetic if pulled over?

Cheers

Jon

Jon,

As with pretty much all detectors it sits around the window area. It shouldn't matter anyway as they are not illegal anymore. Only jammers are likely to annoy the plod.

If you really don't want one on top of your dash then the Blue eye is the way to go. You can mount it anywhere as it has a small antenna that you can hide away to pick up the GPS. It won't pick up mobile sites though.

Justin

i need one

£120 of fines in two days for me and the girlfreind

steve

Ive got a snooper S1 (£99 jobie) and its not worth the plastic its made out of.

Its in the glovebox at the moment, as i cleaned the glass and havent put it back yet, might leave it there.

It has saved me once (i think)on a motorway a it beeped once so i slowed to 70 and there was a copper on the next bridge.

Having said that it shafted me once as i went past a camera van and didnt blink, i got done for 39 in a 30!!! GGGRRRRR

im getting a jammer now, dont care if theyre not legal, can get one through work for about £250ish.

Saw a quote from plod that a ticking off rather than a fine for more minor infractions is out of the question if they catch you with a detector

What I love about the Speed Cheetah is that it's a replacement rear-view mirror, and not as obvious as the usual window mounted detectors.

Also, I agree that any "benefit of the doubt" will disappear when the police see a detector...
