Is this advisable - I know the AFM would need to make sure it didnt get wet but is there owt else or is it really not a good thing.

Car has been in bodyshop and engine is absolutely covered indust and crap.

I had one of them little vaporetti hand held steamers - only holds .5 litre of water and you can direct the nozzle to about an inch of steam at a time, so they're pretty accurate. Sold it tho coz it was crap - but never tried it on the engine - wish I had kept it.

Ryan, I didnt mean garden hose, you can get some little pump up water holders (I think for doing weeds etc) that pressurises and gives a small spray of water.

for my tuppence I support the water being a problem but not the cause theory. I use gunk and the garden hose and just liberally spray the engine bay with it (both on my NA and the TT before any snidey comments :)) I have also used the wand of a jetwash on all my cars and bikes. The only thing I would say is to have the engine warmed up and running while you do it

  thank you Jock :hyper:

I think what jock said is a really good idea, have the engine running whilst you steam clean, although would the steam still have the same effect on a warm engine?

I personally wouldnt steam clean mine though, it'd have to be a toothbrush job...

I'm cleaning mine with petrol. :D

The parts are in a big bucket

My car got steam cleaned by the Joker I bought it from. It made all the connectors oxidise up and ended up giving up and having to buy a new loom plus sensors.

DONT DO IT. clean it by hand

Hope Boggins reads that:D

I remember seeing someone in a BRAND NEW Merc struggling to get his immobiliser off after a steam clean in the middle of Moss Side!!! Not a good idea at all - he was there for hours. Anyway if it's too clean, it'll only rust!

i would NEVER steam clean my engine bay (as many people will testify!! is there gonna be the "grubbiest engine bay award" at billing this year :D). if you really, really want to clean it then wash down with degreaser, then either just hose it off or pressure wash (no heating the water please - thats what causes moisture to build up in the connectors).

unless youve got serious oil leaks pissing out everywhere then i cant see the point TBH, but then again im not really an engine bling bay fan! engine bays for keeping the engine in, cleaning its not gonna make it any quicker :p

Hope Mr B&Q Baggins reads that too:D:D;)

And of course Mac connectors only ever oxidise on a zed when a steam cleaner has been used :xxx:

Ok so just to prove a point .......to the big fella , car turns up at the weekend with underneath covered in oil (looks like oil is leaking from everywhere) little bit of gunk and the steam cleaner for 5 mins and low and behold you can see the oil leak not to mention clean up all the crap that has leaked everywhere

Valeting Co...Autosmart have a chemical called G101, it is

a lime green colour, water rinsable de-greasant. It is

brilliant! Like gunk, but twice as strong. Put some in a spray

bottle, spray around engine bay....use a toothbrush too.

Either wipe off with a rag, or carefully spray water to rinse

it off.

PS: Make sure you clean the toothbrush before you put it

back in the bathroom!! :nono:

Have to admit - you would have to be very brave to jet wash the Z engine. So many connectors and wires. Last year I spent about 30 hours with a toothbrush and a dozen cans of brake cleaner getting everything buffed up.

However, as a precaution to those of you that are adament about steaming or jet washing, might I recommend that you spray WD40 on each connector first. Might save you some pain later.

BTW - how much is that steam cleaner thing. They come in handy for cleaning barbeque grills.

I should be on commission from B&Q about £30 I think Cos , does also work great on a BQ .....

so it would seem!!! :D

Had the engine bay steam cleaned in my BMW with no problems and it looked well good. Done it again on my Golf Gti but it cut out half way through. WD40 on all the connectors and it wa s fine. Done it again on my pug 205 gti and it got fvcked!! Water went everwhere!! Had to take nearly everything out n clean it then 100 miles or more of missfiring, it eventually cleared up. Would even think of going near a Z engine bay with one!!

Ah fook it, drive the Zed into the river, scrub her, and then drive at 180mph for 180 miles.

Job fookin done!! :):)

Iain there is a big difference between a jetwash and a steam cleaner :slap:
