Might be stating the obvious (to some) but something I didn't realise until I started trying to pick tyres for aftermarket wheels is that the profile figure - e.g. 40 - is 40% of the width.
So for a 255/40/17 tyre - diameter is 255mm, profile / side wall is 102mm (40% of 255), and radius is 17inches.
Learning this made it all make a lot more sense to me. I also have this graphic to refer to. Can't recall where I found it but it's now saved on my desktop!
I also wanted a chunky looking tyre with a solid side wall and after going 245(F) / 265 (R) , have since switched back to 235(F) / 255 (R) as I found the handling was noticeable more boggy and I use the car for fast road and track use. For ref, these tyres are on 18" BBS LMs.

A guy an a croc walk into a bar an the guy says
"I'll have a pint, and one of your regulars for the croc."
The barman says
"you cant do that!"
so the guy said
"if you dont give him a regular then he goes pshcho and will trash the bar."
the barman says
"ok take that old tramp in the corner."
so the croc does and they go.
Until the next day when they come back and ask for the same again. 1 pint and a regular for the croc. But the barman says
"sorry i have no regulars left! They all went after they heard about what happened the other night."
The guy said
"well you know what will happen now...."
that second a dwarf walked into the pub. the guy said
"He'll do! if croc here eats him he wont trash the bar an we'll never come back."
the barman said fair doos
so the croc ate the dwarf but then trashed the bar aswell. the barman said
"why the hell did he do that!?!?"
an the guy replied
"He's a maniac when he's been on the shorts."
