I'm confused (no change there :nelson: ) -why do peeps put mp3 headunits in cars - I thought mp3s were inferior quality to normal CD/tapes ?

That's right, the quality isn't as good but the mp3 software removes stuff the human ear 'apparently' can't hear, ie, a sound behind a bass beat. The up side is you can get a 5hit load more tracks onto a cd

But will you not increase the mass of the disc if you put more songs on it?

No, the cd will still be 800Mb, the songs, like computer files, on the disk are smaller than normal cd songs, the mp3 player sorts the rest out

I was dubious about MP3s but tbh there isn't much difference - you have to remeber that a car interior is about the worst sound stage you can possibly have, so the more delicate sounds etc will be lost on all but the very best systems...

as ANDYDUFF says the diffeerence in a car will be non-existent

only time when you would notice a diiference if they were re-encoded at a low bitrate, ive had the same two mp3 discs in my car for months, two 800 meg discs is a LOT of tracks

or are mp3 players as heavy as CD players/tape/radio units ?

Duffer how dare you talk about music quality when all you listen to is that bleep bleep bleep thump thump thump sh1te

Bwahahahahah

Too right, I have about 2500 tracks on my mStation !

It depends on the quality of the MP3. at 128bit, I can hear the difference between the MP3 and original CD. But that is only with very good computer speakers and only when I pay one straight after another. You can can tell mostly on the letter "s".

At 160 its a lot harder to tell the difference and at 190+ I cant tell.

Like said with naff sound in a car, I doubt you can tell the quality difference between 160 and CD.

Of course you can get variable rate MP3s, where the compression decreases where its better not too and increases where less is going on in the songs.

I have a car MP3 player and I can fit well over over 150 songs on a CD.

i love my mp3 player. the quality of the sound is as good as cd, except i can fit 150 tracks on a disc, not 10. and it plays normal cds as well. :)

Good thing about the MP3 player I have, and probably they are all like that. You can put the songs into directories and play all the songs in 1 directory or all the songs in any directory.

It also displayes the songs in alphabetical order or search so its easy to find the on you want.
