just took th car up to huddersfield and back yesterday and the smoke problem is doing my head in now so jus thought id see wot everyone thinks the problem could be, wot i have noticed:

1) driving at constant speed (eg 80mph) then releasing th accelarator, after about 5 seconds i get some white smoke out the back, when accelerating again a whole load of white smoke comes out then it clears up

2) if i rev the car in neutral and keep it at a constant rpm above 2000 after a while white smoke starts coming out th exhaust

3) if a rev th car to say 5000rpm then let it drop straight away i get white smoke about 5 secs after it settles to idle rpm again, this is all with engine fully warmed up.

apart from tht i do get some smoke every now and then but cnt really tel how n why, any ideas?

cheers in advance guys

bleed screw? wheres that then and whats it for bud?

how far below the rad cap should the water be in the radiator?

The bleed screw is at the top of the opposite side of the radiator (ie driver side) - plastic screw-in type thing with a cross-head. Careful when you undo it because it's quite easy to chew it up if you use a screwdriver too small.

The reason you should top up from here is so you're definitely replacing air that's got into the system - if you fill the overflow tank there's no guarantee the air at the top of the radiator will ever be pushed into the overflow.

The level shouldn't be too far down at all! You have to allow a bit of time for fluid to trickle round the radiator and push the air out of the bleed screw end too, so don't necessarily stop filling the first time the neck fills up, let it settle a bit. You can even run the engine for a very short period with the rad cap off to make sure all the air gets pushed out the top of the rad, but don't do that for too long!

Bleed screw?!? New to me too!!

Learn somet new everyday!!

Unless my rads different??

Isn't the level of water in the overflow tank depandant on how much water the main radiator system needs. The way i understand it is that the system uses water from the overflow when it needs it, and puts it back when it doesn't.

Always loosen the bleed screw to get rid of the air bubbles.
