Shock Absorbers

Have had a search around and found only two types people are talking about - KYBs and Toxicos (sure thats not spelt right) - Sounds like the Toxics are quite hard which wont suit me as essential to have relatively comfortable ride due to long commute - have heard good words about the KYBs but is the main choice really only between these two and standard ? Am going for the Blitz springs if this makes a difference ?

Words of wisdom needed !

I have Tokico adjustables with them set on the firmer side of midpoint. I find these fine, but you could set them on the soggy side for weekdays and teeth rattling mode for weekends.

Sounds like an idea, how much hassle is adjusting them - do I need to get the car up to do it?

look at got rice or phone johnny at grasshopper.

the adjustment is quit easy and can be done in a few minutes i think.

Tokikos are very good but have heard of problmes with leaking ones quite often, kyb have more adjustments i think aswell

they are not the only guys who do kits \

companies include :ENNEPETAL / SUSTECH /KONI / OHLINS / BILSTEIN / GAB / POTENZA / IMPUL / NISHIKI / Z SPORT / BLITZ / JDS / SECRET SPORTS / COCKPIT

differences between Tokicos and KYBs :-

KYB are gas filled - lifetime guarantee i think

Tokico are oil filled - not sure of guarantee

i have KYB adjustables, set at 75% towards hard...

fronts have 4 position adjust

backs have 8 position adjust

fronts are adjusted by turning a selector in the top of the strut, 4 points marked on it

rears are adjusted by turning a selector on the bottom of the strut, 8 points marked.

they click at each position, so no ambiguity, and no jacking up, or taking wheels off (although you do have to lay on floor for backs)

Adjusting the Tokicos is OK. Bonnet up for the fronts, rears are a bugger unless you drill two small holes in the plastic strut covers, in which case it's a 10 second jobbie with a screwdriver.

Tokico guarantee is lifetime, but as with all these things they have to be returned to the manufacturer.

Hi, I had a quote from Demon Tweeks for a full set of Koni's for my '92 UKTT was about £385 but only adjustable on the rears I think (or it could have been the fronts).

I find KYB-rears easy to adjust, as I've got 5-spoke

rims and I'm able to stick my hand inbetween the spokes.

You can even see the adjusting knob from outside (with a flash light).

So, no crawling on the ground necessary...

New rears I fitted were stock Tokicos. They're plenty firm for me with 18" and 265X35. And well stiff with the handbrake up one notch!

Willeo, How much were the stock shocks if you don't mind me asking??

cheerZ Jon.

WillieO, I'm in the dark when it comes to shock absorbers here. Do your new shocks still have the Nissan actuators connected to them then? I was made to understand that aftermarket shocks would mean sacrificing the active suspension that a standard model has.

Well bugger,

Just spent the afternoon & night replacing Tockios for new ones (for mot) noboby said they had a lifetime garantee - ba humbug.

The UK ajustable system is very cleaver & apparently its on all Z32's its just the top motor the imports are missing! Everything else is there!

If anyone is doing there own dampers PLEASE watch your hands.

My o/s spring is now passing Gretna Green !!!

If I remember right they Nissan price was around £100 each plus Vat. The stock ones are made by Tokico. I had a mate in trade who got me 30% discount on that. They dont come with actuators but you just refit the actuators onto them. They are at the top inside the car. Held on by m6 bolts I think. You have to be careful to get them on the right way round. Doing the handbrake trick is diagnostic to check they are actuating properly and stiffening up. Taking the internal trim off takes a fair bit of time but changing the shocks are fairly straightforward. Spring compressor needed.
