Hi guys,

ok this is my first post on these boards, lets see if you guys can help me.

I bought my first 300ZX TT a few weeks ago, its a stunning looking and is very fast of course. But there are several things that are bothering me.

1) I filled the coolant levels up the other day, the filler on the right of the engine bay (thats the coolant right?) and the filler on the left (thats the washer jets?) i only used water on the offchance i got them mixed up, so can someone advise which is which? Anyway Got in my car today, every time i accelerated i heard a gush of water, particularly when i was turning too, i was only doing 20 - 30 mph on average, but i suddenly noticed water spewing into the passenger side footwell, i mean bucket loads!!! But it only happened on acceleration and turning.

Did i fill the wrong thing up? I only used water!

2) The power steering keeps failing on me, randomly but often, as i turn the sterring wheel it would suddenly become stiff, on my old cosworth it was loose bolts but on the Z? Aint got a clue, anyway, were is the power steering fluid filler on this car? I noticed there are two fillers on the left of the engine bay, one looks like the brake fluis res and the other i presume is the power steering, can someone clarify for me? They are both full anyway. Any ideas why the steering is locking up?

3) I get this loud growl from the rear left hand side of the car when i accelerate and am doing over 50MPH and ideas?? Like a deep whining noise, a deep one, hard to explain. Any thoughts?

4) What oil should i put in this car? it is a TT.

5) This is gonna sound weird, but, where the hell are the spark plugs on this thing?? There seems to be a slight misfire now on idle, never did it before.

P.S. I had a mint 309 BHP 2WD Sapphire Cosworth before and the Z is way faster and smoother so i'm a happy camper. Still have my RS Turbo though

Anyone answers all these questions gets a virtual beer :duffer:

hehe

1) will be your heater matrix has gone, Welcome to the club! Kep an eye on your fluid levels cos you'll be overheating very soon!

Do a search there is a bypass you can do to stop the leeking matrix untill you get a new one. Also think you should buy a grounding kit to stop the new one from going as well when you do get one.

2) Probably a bad speed sensor or wiring to/from it. Its located on the underside of the gearbox. The power steering "heaviness" is determined by the signal from the speed sensor.

The two pots you describe are correct, the one nearest the front of the car is the powersteering/HICAS fluid.

Thanks guys!

Whats a grounding kit? Never heard of it!

Where can i get a new heater matrix from? Tried searching for this bypass procedure, no luck, any other ideas?

Try mike @MJP (traders section) for heater matrix, quite expensive and takes a long time to fit. It can be advantageous to add extra grounding points, a couple extra ones to you engine and a couple extra ones to your car body. Get a new negative battery terminal (one with extra holes for additional wires) and get some heavy duty wire and terminal lugs from Maplins. Afew people on this forum have demolished heater matrix's in 6 months due to poor grounding.

Why does poor grounding effet them, what happens, do they just burst, why ????

Something to do with a build-up of electricity, causing the coolent liquid to carry a charge of electricity that errodes through the radiator and heater matrix in no time. Apparently you can test it yourself, by testing the voltage of the coolent with a standard voltmeter with the engine running, or better still, while cranking the engine. I think anything greater than 0.1v is not good.

Do a search on "grounding kits" and you should find a load of information.

Have you tried to go back to the place you brought it from (persoming a trader??) I'd have said that if the heater matrix has gone, and if you have any sort of warranty ( which you should have if you brought it only a few weeks ago) then the matrix should be covered. Anyway its worth a try.

Also congrats on your new found love :D

4 - any good quality synthetic/semi synthetic will be fine. i use Mobil Super S semi synth 10W40

5 - plugs are under individual coil packs, for misfires, check the connectors to these & the PTU (ign module located on o/s cam belt cover) first

details on electrolysis attached :)

2) if yours is an import it could well be a dodgy speed converter doing this, what does your speedo do when the steering goes heavy?

3) could be wheel bearings, or maybe the diff if you're unlucky

probably best searching and trying to match other peoples descriptions and solutions to your probs

Funny you should say this because the speedo is always 10 mph less than the actual speed!

Weird eh, so if i'm doing 30 on the clock, i know i'm doing at least 40, any ideas why??

One other thing, there is the very thin red button down the back of the gear leaver, under the overdrive button but round the back towards the engine. What does it do? I have an Auto TT

It lets you change gear with the engine off.

Ocassionally, the switch that works off the brake pedal malfunctions, and does not allow you to take the gearshift out of "Park", by pushing down on that little red thing you can put it in gear. Mine does this once in a while,
