It must be ok to do this as I have seen it lots of times, but a turbo housing can get real hot  What temp will Samco melt?

Thats what I was thinking,so how and why do they do it  My Greddy EGT gauges red line at 900 c,has to be near that temp at times.

think (like speedos) they build in a margin of 150 degrees, thats still three times the melting point, wouldnt half make a mess of your tubs matey

"All matter at temperatures above absolute zero, emits electromagnetic radiation. This is known as black body radiation. The wavelength of the radiation depends upon the temperature of the object. At room temperature the black body radiation is mostly at infrared wavelengths. When an object is heated above approximately 1200 degrees fahrenheit the black body radiation moves into the visable part of the spectrum and can be seen. This form of black body radiation is called incandescent radiation. The tungsten filament in an incandescent light bulb is typicaly heated to 3,000 degrees fahrenheit. "

Sounds like if its glowing like that your temp gauge is going to be a few degrees short

Well it looks like I am going to have to use it on the air intake.

I would be asking the question of samco mate

Or buy a N/A and junk the lot LOL

  • Author
lol, was going to ask, what fuel pump you going to use on this?

dual external mate.

C'mon macca get it finished. :)

Dont forget you promised to do mine next!!! ;)

Connecting silicone to the intake side is no problem at all, thousands upon thousands of turbo'd motors have silicone connected to them, ALL stock turbo cars use standard rubber anyways and never seen one of them melt. That pic of the housing glowing is an exception and clearly showing it's temp is too high, i assume SE are connecting your water feeds ? as this is something they often don't do.

Ok thanks for the samco info, there is no other way of connecting the air intake with a Greddy turbo. However it would take a good man to connect water pipes to Greddy TD05's :D;)

Smithy SE are NOT the only ones that do not connect the water pipes to the turbos.even our friends across the pond are starting to copy him now:D;)

Mac its fine, remember its the exhaust wheel housing at the other end that glows. The compressor housing stays much cooler, thats why its alluminium.

Paul what about the very first picture I posted?Looks dodgy to me

what did peter say, or was it case of suck it and see ?

  • Author

Peter don't know yet,as I am taking the turbos and manifolds to him at the weekend.

guess it will be suck it and see ,I'm not a mechanic but it does not look right to me

Looks like a hedge hog in there mate. He better get out or he`ll be cooked!

The compressor side of the turbo doesn't get that hot - Nissan wouldn't use paper gaskets between the housing and the compressor outlet elbow-joint otherwise, plus, like others have said - a lot of other motors like cossies / ren5 turbos, etc all have rubber going straight to the compressor housing.

Regarding the use of water cooling - its pretty redundant really since the oil does the best job of keeping the internals cool. (Hence the need for a turbo timer / running your engine for a few mins after a long blast)

Simon would you be happy to do what was done in the first pic that I posted?

My short answer is 'Maybe'....

The pic you attched shows the exhaust manifold really close to the samco, so I assume you're going to use some exhaust wrap on the manifolds? Like http://www.proven-products.co.uk/products/cooltek.htm

(I know the manifolds are nice n shiny and good for the photos when left exposed, but in practice they'll radiate so much heat!)

You may also need to use some aluminised wrap for the samco hosing too, I reckon any rubber or silicone within 100mm of the manifold will need it - similar to the positive lead that connects to the starter motor from the battery - thats wrapped in foil-backed tape to insulate from the OS turbo.

That 4p now :)

Simon.
