I currently own a peugeot 306 gti-6. There is nothing wrong with the gti-6 as it is a pretty fast little car (0-60 at 6.85 is my best!). However, I love the shape of the 300 ZX and am looking into buying one. What can I get for 4.5 - 5K? How expensive is routine servicing? Is it easy to do oil changes yourself (unlike gti-6). What is the cheapest insurance anyone have on here and who is it with? Cheers in advance!

buy mine, see the for sale section!!! Some on here get there insurance on classic and are only paying washers for it!

seriously though, go and look in the for sale section theres a few up for grabs in there!

welcome rsgill!! you'll find yourself always on here, and complelled to type and talk everyday of your life from here on!

anyway, servicing i would expect 80% of the people on here do it them selves its very easy, have a good read through the online manual.

insurance, alot of peolpe are with houghton they have a special rate for subscribed members, mine is £200 fully comp, (second car though)

any questions no matter how stupid they may seem ASK!!!

Jim

If your buying try to do it private if i were you. ie stay away from dealers, if you do a search on here you should find all the places to avoid!!!

£4.5k should buy you something pretty respectable, but dont fall in the love with the first one you see on a forecourt, if you buy a bad un it can seriously harm your wallet.

If you state where your from, no doubt someone off here local to you will volunteer to have a look at one your thinking of buying.

Best of luck.

ok cheers guys, thanks for the input, I shall scout around!

ok guys...now I am getting scared of all this '£2000 here for another turbo and few thousand for new engine, transmission etc' . Fuel consumption is bad too! I was complaining on the gti-6 forum when I was getting less than 24mpg let alone 16mpg with the 300zx!!! Unless I win £10K or so to cover repairs for next couple of years, think I may just stick with the '6'. I'm sure max power got it wrong when the 300zx TT was quoted as 0-60 at 7.1! This is slower than mine! Somebody please tell me this is wrong. :(

That's the NA. Twin Turbo's are 5.6-5.9 to 60 (before they're modded). Gti-6 is a fast hatch, but the Z is in a completely different league. Drive a good one and find out.

Take your time looking and you might find one that's had all the major work done.

somebody said on this forum that it is better to look for private car rather than go to a dealer, is this right?

there seems to be too many dodgy dealers about who haven't got a clue about these cars. Personally I would prefer to buy off a forum member. You can do a search and find out what problems they've come acrros on their Z :) Obviously that doesn't mean it's not gonna break down a 1 week later :(

Hi mate,

As Alex said, 7.1 is for the N/A. A tt will hit 60 in 5.6 and onto 100 in just over 14.......most hot hatches struggle to do that in 20 :)

As for reliability, these are essentially reliable cars - typical Nissan over-engineering. However you must accept that these are complex supercars which at best are 10 years old. And more like 14 years old if you are looking at spending 5K. Yes, it does scare you when you read some of the threads here but it is generally the heavily modified ZXs that suffer more problems. Most things are minor problems specific to these cars and most of us here know how to solve them cheaply and easily - we've all been there

Take your time and get a good one and you'll not be dissapointed. The power of the TT is addictive - bugg*r the fuel bills, if you want economy buy a diesel VW !! I use mine as a daily driver and average around 18mpg. I have had 24mpg on a long m/way run at a steady 90. Oh, and I pay £472 for f/comp insurance on a regular everyday unrestricted policy - my only mods are Azev wheels and an induction air filter kit.

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I bought mine from a dealer who looked and sounded like Graham Norton. When I asked him what security the car had he said "erm, the doors lock."

I've got a mate with a '6, lovely car, handles beautifully, and v nippy :) But the power of the 300 is in a completely different league

Its a scary prospect buying one, especially when you read the odd 3k rebuild story, but then people dont write (much ;) ) "My zed is running great..." when it is.

Pete

My Z is running great! :D

so is mine... want to buy it?

Hi rsgill,

That's with Bell Direct. However I have a UK car and I'm 34, I also live in a low crime area. There are a few companies who offered me cover for similar amounts - Houghtons (recommended by a lot here), Lifesure, Adrian Flux etc.

I chose Bell in the end as they included my wife (28 years old) at no extra cost.

Richard ;)

Thanks for the advice. I am with Bell direct at the moment and they quoted me around £700. But I am 26 and live near London.

Funny but it really helps to change companies sometimes. I was with Houghtons for 3 years with my Supra. When I first thought of buying a ZX they quoted me an extra £20 (1 month into new premium). Then I bought my Zed 6 months later they wanted an extra £58 FFS ???

So at renewal houghtons wanted almost £600, Bell offered a good policy for £472 which I took up. Houghtons have since lowered their price so I will probably go back to them in October.

Performance - mine is a mild tuned NA and runs 6.7 0-60mph. And the performance of a high speed motorway eating 300zx with bloody good looks IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT to a hot hatch for blasting away from the lights in town.

Yes MPG is shocking but what the hey... its worth the looks you get and the massive smile you have on your face while driving it. And remember... being happy keeps blood pressure down putting less strain on your heart. Can you really put a price on your own health!!! :) :) :)

Buy a zed... much better than my mk4 Golf Gti by a LONG way. Oh and the zeds half the price too. Money saved to put towards your fuel bill...

Insurance. Paying 700 myself. 25 years old in south east. with elephant now but i may well be looking up a few of these other insurance companies by the looks of it!!!!

Sound advise. Was looking at twin turbos with 2+2 and targa tops. Do these BOTH exist on UK spec 300's? Anyone got any pics of targa tops or targa top cars??
