I have just been doing a search on aircon, etc. Found loads of good tips, but I did not know about a fan in the roof. I have not heard mine at all, if it has seized up, what are the consequences? Does the car really need it?

Thanks

The fan blows air onto a temperature sensor in the roof. When you set your air con to 25ºC, for example, it does not blow out air at 25ºC. The air con blows cold air if the inside temp is warmer than 25ºC and warm air if the inside temp is colder than 25ºC.

The fan blows air onto the temp sensor so the air con knows what temperature it is inside the car. I think there is a sensor in one of the footwells.

I cant see how the fan not working will make the air con not work. It may give the temp sensor not a totally accurante reading. I dont think you are meant to hear the fan, I can only just hear the fan in my car when I turn the ignition on.

I dropped the fan down from the roof panel. It looks like the previous owner stuffed some foam in the vanes, possibly to stop it from screeching ? But it spins very freely, spin it with your finger and it spins for a long time. I guess its burnt out, its not protected by its own fuse in the fuse box is it?

Thanks

I just checked the wires coming in to the fan with a voltmeter, 12 ok, must be the fan gone.

Oops, I was checking the voltage of the light circuit, the fan circuit is only registering 5 volts. is this right?

hi john i went outside after reading this post and listened for mine, and it was'nt working so i dropped it down and turned the ignition on, the fan moved once then stopped. I then completely removed it and cleaned it sprayed it and, the tiny screw in the centre, slackend it off (very tight) and it work's perfectly now

never knew it wasn't working, now i can hear it spinning when you turn the ignition on.
