Hi guys,

Having a pretty sh*t time at the moment. My auto gearbox has just given up the ghost, with no drive provided in either direction. Any advice of possible cause, or how best to cure ( no manual suggestions please ( pretty please)), or even someone who might be able to do the job for me.

Fairly desperate as I need a car at the moment so if you have any ideas please advise.

Smithy and Dan I have sent you both pms.

Many thanks for reading,

Simon. :( :(

Simon, first try is to disconnect the battery for 30mins then reconnect - that will reset the ecu for the auto box and *may* cure your problem - no promises though :(

Well I would if I could shut my bl**dy alarm up!!!

Why whats it doing? Won't turn off?

You need to put it into valet mode to remove the battery - oh and don't leave the keys in the car either ;)

have you checked the oil level?

Have you moved the lever out of neutral? :D

My box did this after doing donuts at Johnny's once.

Anyone still got the video? :D

As Andy said, disconnecting the battery sometimes sorts its head out!

Have you moved the lever out of neutral? :D

!

 :xxx:

I sure have still got the vid ;) It was me that made it LOL

In order of stupidity, yes it's out of neutral! :D

Oil level okay!! :D

Andy's disconnection idea worked for a few seconds each way. :x: :(

So now the plot has thickened has anyone any further ideas please.

Simon.

Sounds like a possible faulty auto ecu???? Not sure - know anyone near with a known good one???

I forgot about that!

Best bit was Tooley heading sideways towards a phone/cable box in someones garden :D LOL

I shit myself after the donuts when somebody said the cops were on their way and we all left but my Z would only do 5mph in first! LOL

Simon, I've got a spare auto ECU you could borrow but I've never heard of them going faulty before...

My thanks for your offer Chris. I may need to take you up on it. Time is of the essence as I 've got my Mum's funeral on Tuesday, and so need the car ASAP.

I do wonder if it is an electrical or component fault, as the symptoms shown, which happened on a motorway, where like progressivlry worse clutch slip, not just instantly nothing.

Sorry for giving the symptoms after the diagnosis, I'm not thinking desperately clearly. (No change there I know!)

Any other ideas now I've been able to give you more to chew on?

Thanks to all who have contributed so far,

Simon.

If it started slipping then it could be the clutch packs worn out, in which case it's a recondition job :(

Were you thrashing it at the time?

Is the car cold now?

When this happened on mine I found it was OK for a bit when cold but as it warmed up the slip got worse until it wouldn't move but first and reverse were fine.

Is it an import?

If so, try pressing Hold and pull away in a higher gear to see if that works?

Chris,

No I wasn't caning it, quite the opposite, what with the running about I've done today. Go on frighten me, what sort of pennies am I looking at?

Simon.

  • Author

Oh, yes, it is an import, and this is probably the hottest day I've done any kind of mileage in it.

Simon.

It's a long time since I looked into auto repairs but I think you'll be looking at about £1200 to recondition and refit!? Could be wrong.

I decided to convert mine to a manual for about £600 with a 2nd hand box.

  • Author

Oh round spherical objects!

Manual isn't an option unfortunately.

I think I need to sleep on this. Right now I feel like setting fire to it. I know from reading the other posts that I haven't had it as badly as many others on the site, but I still could have done without this right now.

Thanks anyway,

Simon.

Simon, have you done the Auto diagnostics thats in the online manual, sorry to hear of your probs, hope its not a fried box, :(

Right, went through the procedure twice. No faults showing.

Previously having disconnected the battery for thirty minutes on Andy Duff's advice, the gearbox engaged in both forward and reverse gears for a short while. This has happened again, but without disconnecting the battery. Would this have anything to do with cooler transmission oil? I have heard about auto boxes overheating, particularly imports. Would a total change of oil cure this, or is it still likely to be more serious, ie the clutches aspreviously mentioned?

just read the reply about a fried box. Is replacement the only option if this is the case?

Simon

Replacement no,unless you going to go manual route,i just recently paid £999 to have mine sorted,it is an uprated torque converter and box anyway but after 3 years of abuse all i had was 1st and 2nd and slipping, the price included all parts and labour, well impressed, took em 5 days in total, 3 days of that waiting for parts, just a thought is the oil reddish still in colour, another thing, smell it,mine was red and smelt burnt, when they dropped the sump there were bits of this and that in there etc.According to this chart you may have bad linkage or even Torque converter probs,or line pressure fault :(

Well, had a guy come out and have a look. Car has drive while fluid is cold. He diagnosed knackered front pump and possible clutches problems. He's making some calls before he comes back to me with a price. I'm not holding my breath.

While I'm on here, firstly my thanks to all who have tried to help, and I'd particularly like to name Smithy, and Danny from DTA, who have both behaved impeccably and considerately. A special thanks to both of you. I hope to conclude my business with as soon as I'm able, you're gents.
