Exhaust rattle

My (new) exhaust rattles when I go off the accellerator, and it's getting to be very annoying. It's decatted and the heat shield has been cut away, so it's not that.

Is it likely to be just the metal vibrating against the car body? If so how do I get rid of it? I took it back to the fitter who took off a support bar from the old exhaust, but it's still noisy. Any other ideas?

Hi Rich,

Just a thought, your fitter didn't take off the black strip of steel about 12 inches long by 3 inches wide that bolts across the tunnel under the exhausts did he?? because that is supposed to brace the body??!!

Paul N

Oooooh!! yes he did. i'll have to put it back on!!

That little bit of metal!! I did ask him and he said, yes just take it off you don't need it.

Yep, make sure you put it back, it's nothing to do with the exhaust anyway, so I'm surprised he'd say that!! (come to think of it, I'm not really!!)

out of interest (as I have the same N/A set up) as you've decatted, what have you done with the exhaust gas recirc. gubbins that fed into the old pipes before the cats? and the cats temp. sensors?

Paul N

Now I'm worried. He fitted the temperature sensors into the decat pipes. As far as I know. (doesn't sound hopeful does it). He did show me.

Tell me about the gas recirc. stuff. What does it do? Should the fitter have done something specific with it or is it surplus to requirments? I am worried now. I don't suppose he was to know the metal bar was important. Unfortunately neither did I.

Rich,

The cat temp sensors are no longer needed if you have no cats, so they are often removed, if he's fitted them into the new pipes, that will do no harm at all, just didn;t need to thats all, but usefull if you decided to re-cat!! so to speak.

The other gubbins, depends on what he's done, if you've had the system replaced from the manifold (which I would expect) the new piping won't allow for the pipes that go to the recirc stuff (unless he's constructed something for this) so assuming theyv'e been disconnected, you normally remove the piping and cap off or remove the rubber pipes they lead to. To be honest, I asked as I'm interested in what was done in case I decide to go this route at some stage, I'm not an expert!! There should be many on here who can confirm how these should be removed!! Sorry I can't be of more help!

The sensors in the decat pipes are the lambda sensors? Am I right? do they tell the ecu how much unburned fuel is getting to the exhaust? Mine are loose and that's what the rattle is.

When they did the decat pipes they welded an 'opening' into the pipes for the sensors. They are not air tight and are rattling around. If I seal them up with exhaust putty or high temperature sealant will that work?

Rich,

No! the sensors in the exhausts are to detect overheating of the cats and will not effect engine management at all I beleive. The Lambda sensors are in the manifolds.

Mind you, if they are rattling about, sounds like you need to have words with the exhaust fitter!

Paul N

I have used sealant to hold the sensors in place, and I'll see what it is like when it has dried. Hopefully it will withstand any heat.

So I could just remove the temperature sensors? Are they really of any use? All this is the trouble with getting something done by someone who doesn't know the cars, however good they might be, and I can't advise them of anything much yet either.

Rich where did you have it done mate?? In leamington or else where..

Are you still living in Leamington?

I had to choose between Powerflow and Longlife. The Powerflow guy is just round the corner from me on the Sydenham industrial estate. Longlife are in Walsall. I went there and in general was happy with the job they did apart from the rattle etc. They were really friendly. Having searched on here about exhausts quite extensively now (!!), I'd say the pipes that look to be the best I've seen are from a guy John Dixon recommends:

The pictures on this thread look like the pipes are well made and bent.

Did I read on a thread somewhere you'd moved? If not I'll be trying to spot the black SWB TT, and going green with envy. *******.
