my Z's been acting up today, when I was sitting in traffic the idling started to get all lumpy and even when the engine was revved it still done the same. It carried on doing it even when I moved off but after about 30 seconds of driving it stops. Any ideas what could be causing it? I thought plugs, but they were changed about 20k miles ago.

The first thing i would do is to clean out the throttle bods i was having probs with my idle did this job last week when i fitted new hardpipes and i could not beleive how smooth it is now.

I'll second Mac's advice (I'll be doing that tomorrow)..

Also, have a listen to see if you have a vacuum leak (pop the bonnet, listen for a distinct hissing sound).. If you do, try pinching vacuum hoses until the sound disappears..

Common culprits I believe are the PCV valves (the vac lines to mine are leaking somewhat at the moment).. This is, if I'm looking at the right one, also shared with the boost gauge sender.. (left corner of the engine bay, nearest the windscreen)

I cleaned the tb's a little while ago.

With a vacuum leak, would the lumpy idle not keep happening when driving? and also it's only when I've been sitting in traffic for a while. I'll have a listen tomorrow anyway.

I feel for yer Vij mate, my Kirk has virtually cut out on me twice this week, strangely enough when I've been going to Luton! Hmmmm, maybe he doesn't like going to Luton anymore?!?!?!?!

Similar thing though, when it's hot outside and I've been sitting in traffic for a while, then go to pull away...fooker starts farting and spluttering and loses power! Weld my foot down on the throttle, keep it there for a few seconds and then he kicks into life again. WTF is going on?

Embarassingly kangarood down the main street earlier on in the week making me shit meself!

Drove back tonight and no probs at all! Wondering if it might be something to do with fuel, been seriously mixing it in the last week!

Usually run him on BP fuels, but started to use Super again coz of the rattlies, then filled up with Shell Optimax on the M6 last week. Wondering if that might have something to do with it? Or could it be that I've done more than 20,000 clicks since getting him, not changing the oil in all that mileage and not having him serviced coz Kirk Dealers charge 64 squid an hour???? Maybe! LOL!

Dazz,

sorry to be thick here, but where am I looking?

And are u Darren (top mechanic)??

Vijay

What about PTU? Could be a dodgy PTU too I imagine..

PTU is on the front left of the engine, look down from the main boost hoses..

coil pack/injector connectors - look between the 'legs' of the inlet manifold on the top of the engine - 12 connectors, 2 on each cylinder.. One is the coil pack (on top of the spark plug) other is the injector..

cheers for that, I'll have a good nose around in the morning.

Vijay

...and yes...that is the legendary Darren. Top banana!!!

just wanted to say thanks again, it lookes as though it was a connector on top of a coil pack. One of the connectors wasn't on properly (one under the balace tube) and I cleaned them all up and hey what a differnece it has made, the car seams really smooth and quiet now.

What the F**k would I do without this site, a year ago, I would have been shitting it, not knowing where to look and bringing my beloved Z to a local Nissan dealership!

Thanks everyone!!

Vijay
