mmm, sounds like someones been under there clocking it by force - this can damage to cogs so that it jams from time to time.

There may be other reasons, but a mate of mine noticed this problem on a car he had just bought, he took it back to the dealer, who said it was nothing (!), so then he contacted the local ombudsman. He got his money back straight away, then the Police went in and I think the dealer is inside now.

its both the trip and the ordemetre - and they are seperate right??

so it cant be jamming can they?? - they both stop at the same time

Also i know it has been changed because when it was brought back from japan they changed it from 37000k to 23000m (or what ever it is) - ive had the car 12months and this has never happened before!!

Cheers

Tom,

Its perfectly ok to change an odometer from 37000 km to 23000 miles, its the same thing.

My odometer and the trip odometer stopped working a couple of months ago, I took it apart, and found that the plastic gears were not meshing. I unloosened the screws, moved them into mesh, tightened the screws up and its been fine ever since.

Taking your time, its about a 2 hour job. theres a link on this forum that give you step by step instructions with photos.

There is a problem with the gears locking, especially on cars this old. As much as you think it is sealed, dust will get in there.

They are electronic arnt they? could it possibly be a loose connector somwhere before i go pulling it apart?

Im not sure on how its converted from kph to mph - is this an electronic unit or something?

Thanks

I doubt if its a loose connector mate, I think your going to have to pull it apart, the conversion from km to miles is usually by wiring in a little black box.

Do you have a speedometer that goes up to 190, and with a nice neat sticker that says mph (its over the km) ?
