I have been using Castol RS 10w-60 and somebody mentioned to me that this was the wrong oil too!?

Any takers?

Just called nissan near me and he said 0w40 is what they use in their 300's but ofcourse they could be wrong and there will probably be some expert's on here so any view's quick as I'm gonna be off to get it changed soon

castrol 10w60 seems to be the oil of choice, personally I think 0w40 is too thin. If the engine is used to a thicker oil you may experience leaks at some seals etc. Do a search though as im sure some people use 0w40

I think 0w40 is too thin, 10w50 would be better.

What is wrong with the Magnatec, I know it's not fully synth, but there shouldn't be a panic to remove it.

basically been told about it's proporties and it just cannot handle the heat a turbo car gives off and crystalizes the oil and block's up the oil lines etc.. etc...

I think i'm gonna try the mobil, and if it's no good i'll try that castrol won't do any harm changing oil again, will clean the engine.

Just so happens that the guy who did my engine said same a while ago  but i did not think to much of it at the time,as there are so many conflicting stories, but no smoke without fire, maybe,i am using 10-60RS at the moment, nice stuff ;)

I'm using Castrol RS 0/40, but would like to change to RS 10/60 - but I'm having trouble finding any. Does anyone know where it is available?

Dave

This would be good on the FAQ. I know lots of people have talked about it, and you can search- but sometimes that brings up as many questions and different opinions. It would be good to have a short list of some preferred oils that people have used.

Maybe it's there and I have missed it- but I did have another quick look to see.

I've used Mobil 1 in 0w-40 rating, and found I got a LOT of tappet rattle. I only use Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w - 50 now, and have no troubles.

0/40 is too thin for our cars imho. Castrol RS 10/60 or me

Are you suggesting you are a bit thick James, lol.

Ha ha!!! I was going to edit the "f" in - but it just makes the post look untidy with the edited by at the bottom!

Trust you to spot it! :slap: LOL.

Depends on the condition of your engine....

If it isn't too worn, then 0w40 will be fine, although Mobil-1 is a thin oil that drains back into the sump too quickly. Castrol 0w40 RS is a better oil IMO.

I use Shell Helix Ultra 5w40 fully synth and have no probs.....

Thicker oils like 10w60 better if engine has a lot of wear or is of a high state of tune, generating more heat than stock. Handbook says the "40" part of the grade is more than adequate in the UK.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

OK, a bit alarmist perhaps, but I firmly believe you should use a fully synth oil, not so worried about blockage of oil lines, but the turbo spindles get f-hot and if it burns/crystalises/sticks on those then the seals wear faster and it's blue smoke time ! A fully synth oil should have better high temp properties than a minera oil. I recollect that Nissan specify something like 10w40, I use 10w50 and am quite happy with my oil pressure.

Halfords have it sometimes.
