There is always one bolt that won't come off!!!

I'm in the (long) process off pulling my engine out to do the head gaskets/turbo's. I removed the exhaust system yesterday, the right hand side came off fine. But I can't get the bolt for the cat temp probe on the left hand side out of the cat. I could keep it plugged in while doing all the other work on the car but it'd be a pita. As i'm going to drill in an exhaust temp dial, do you guys reckon it'd be ok just to cut the hose and cap it off? Oh the nut is practically destroyed now. wink.gif

any ideas?

cheers.

Hi Ben,

I've just pulled mine yesterday actually. I think what you're talking about it the Oxygen sensor. I've left both of mine in place, since they come out with the engine. I believe they're expensive to change - so do be careful.

If the downpipes from the turbos can be removed, I'd do that, disconnect the oxygen-sensor connectors from the top wiring loom. The NS (passenger side) one, is a little more tricky to get the large connector down behind the engine.

This is my engine as of yesterday afteroon:

Simon.

Amazing!!! The VG30DETT is bigger than a Citroen AX!!!!! biggrin.gif

The O2 sensors are around £60 each so its up to you...... Sounds to me something more like the aiv returns though......

I'm actually wondering if their part of a lambda system?!?! I dunno, I'll get a picture soon and show you guys.

Ben - if you are talking about something attached to the *main* CAT's (not the pre-cats if you have them, which are bolted up to the turbos), and what you are looking at is a metal tube that comes out of the CAT and runs parallel to the underside of the car, then that is the AIV line. Which can be removed (the entire AIV system).

If however you meen the small cylinder on top of the pre-cat/downpipe, then that is the lambda probe..

Simon, those pictures are fantastic. Got any more (or higher res versions?)

Andy

HOLY SHIT SIMON! there is a small green alien living under your slam panel.

It has two horrible tenticles and by the look of it, it seems to be feeding itself from your intercoolers!!!

I'd watch it doesn't bite you.

Andy,

If you're not a one engined man and don't mind looking at dirty engine pics from other Z's? Perv...LOL! Then check out the pics on the Aus Z forum, they've got loads with engine dismantled bit by bit etc. Excellent!

i swear the size of the 300z engine makes me wonder why they jus did'nt build a V8

Yeah that green alien sucks - literally!

Timmy - a V8 would have been LURRRVLEY - there's just enough of room for another two cylinders - provided Nissan made that ENORMOUS cooling fan a bit smaller, and put all the rads closer forwards.

Andy - if I can, I'll get them in the rides section...some of the originals are 1800*1200 so pretty good smile.gif I took more earlier after removing the NS turbo - its shafted!!! The compressor wheel has almost a whole millimetre's play in it. Manual says 0.056 - 0.127 mm. That's about 10 times too much!

Ben - you're about to have mail.

Simon.

What is the "average" hours to pull and put back in? (8 hrs each?)

(I have to figure how much it's gonna cost me to get done)

[This message has been edited by Droop (edited 18-09-2001).]

So far its taken (approx.):

  • Whole Exhaust - 45 minutes
  • Heat Shield - 2 minutes
  • Prop Shaft - 10 minutes
  • Manual Tranny - 2 hours (steering linkage, and the top two bolts are a BUGGER to remove)
  • Engine pipes/electics - 2 hours
  • PS/ALT/AirCon - 1.5 hours
  • Align hoist with slingers - 30 minutes
  • Pull engine - 20 minutes

I have *yet* to but it back - I'm I'm reckoning twice the amount of time.

Would you be doing the work yourself, or getting a garage to do it? My local Nissan dealership wanted 500 squid for the pull, and another 500 for replacement!

Simon.
