Hi Guys,

Today i've tried to remove my original eprom chip to fit a socket, all the solder appears to be out but the chip is still very tight, i'm just wondering if there is any glue or whatever under it, i don't want to risk doing any damage so i thought it best to ask before getting a crowbar under it :D

Yes, there is a varnish or lacquer sprayed over the board that sticks the EPROM down. You need to be very careful levering up the chip because it can pull up the tracks, score the tracks with your lever or pull out the plated holes !

Thanks mate, i'd guessed it was something like that but i thought i'd better check first, bit too expensive to rush and f**k it up.

Thanks

Baz

The best way is to cut all the legs so you can remove the body of the chip first, that way you won't lift any tracks. Prise it up with a plastic lever that's pretty wide from one end.

You can use a little acetone (or nail varnish remover) to soften up the laquer a bit first.

Ha, I've had a bit of practice at these now and can remove the chip without damaging it !

I'm trying to remove it without damaging it too, that way i can put it into the socket and be sure i haven't damaged the ecu while messing, otherwise when i put the upgrade in i don't know if it's the ecu or the chip that i got off e-bay, for all i know could be for an automatic toaster.

(Hope that makes sense)

Lol! Usually try not to damage the ECU. Let me know if you ever get a 93+ (AIV Delete) Auto chip out, be a good base code to have.

LOL!! my mate works for AVO meters, hes got a jig that clamps down, desolders it & removes it in one go :D

still got my old stock one without any signs of removal at all!!!

Hmmm, anyone on the forum got one of these then ?

Seems to be a rare one unfortunately (needs to be 93-95 phase 2, 8 bit) thinking it's best to use conZult to pull one out if anyone has.

John I should be able to obtain a 93+ bin file from the US , without to many probs , I will ask the question for you

I had my original EPROM removed yesterday for £3 at a video repair shop. Better than risking it yourself!
