You have to cut away some of the slam bar which protects the chassis to install it. Also larger intercoolers actually make performance worse because of the extra lag and pressure drop from the turbos to the engine. Its only when you are pushing serious power with large turbos at high PSI is it worth having a large FMIC, IMHO.

Hmmmmmm where's me cheque book? :D This is something I really need and would be good to fit while the bumpers off replacing the front cross member :D Can I find £500..... Lets see :D

Now to answer the question, unles you're runing some serious turbos, I wouldn't bother ;) FMIC does give increased lag unfortunately as there is more 'space' to fill with air before pressure increases...

Larger intercoolers with bigger internal diameter pipes will indeed increase lag but will increase power, even on the standard engine. Cooler air and less back pressure against the turbo from the ic is always good.

But if the ic is not receiving a full stream of air from the front (like with the stock bumper) you will get a better performance from aftermarket wing mount ones.

The rad might get hotter as well with a big front mount one.

Mmmmm, seems plusses and minusses for this, not happy enough with all your suggestions to shell out £500!?!?!?!

MMMMmmmmmm, well, I aint gonna be running that much boost! Although I am not sure what I can turn it up to to be safe any ideas Andy/anyone???? :o?

This is a matter of personal opinion, but the higher the boost you run, the more strain you're putting on. On stage 1 hybrids you need to keep it down to around 1 bar to be totally 'safe'.

(YES I KNOW LOTS OF YOU RUN MUCH HIGHER BUT TICK TOCK _ THAT's THE CLOCK TICKING!)

Using a boost controller would allow temporary increased boost (eg for when you see a Scooby!) and 'sensible' boost for normal driving

Hi Nigel,

Well I just bought a Apexi AVC-R, this thing looks the bees nees but I havent had it fitted yet, soon to be done!!!

So ideally, what low and high setting would I have?

What do you guys run?!?! I might start a seperate thread for this!!

The AVC-R lets you have two full setups (A and B - and quite easy to switch between them) plus a "scramble" for extra boost when required. You can wire the scramble function into a button somewhere. You see a 996 on the horizon, you press the button. :D

I used to have mine on .75 bar (little bit over stock) most of the time and 1 bar when playing. It does say you shouldn't switch settings when driving, only when stationary and idling (and I can see the logic!)

You WILL need a PSI->mmHg->bar crib chart! I made one in Excel and stuck it on the inside of the glove box when I was trying to get it all right.

(New Z doesn't have a boost controller yet...)

Totally agree with Nigel's sense of impending doom...

Also worth getting one of Vijay's boost leak detectors, the AVC doesn't like boost leaks at all!

Hi Zevans, thank you very much for that info, most useful!!!!

I will e-mail vijay today and get one ordered.

Could you e-mail me that chart you were talking about please!?

That massive intercooler will look superb behind the bumper, but check out the seller's feedback rating before you put in a bid! :nono:

There is also a issue of cooling. Some people say it effects the air flow to the radiator and some say its doesnt.

Like everything on here, you can find fans and grim reapers with opposite opinions on any subject. General rule of thumb is that whatever the mod you are going to shorten the life of something in there!
