been testing two different tps's

the one off my car and one i was lent

neither of them will read above 3.2 with

throttle completely released not the 4

that is stated does this mean that they are

both faulty and need to buy a new one???????

what's the reading at idle ?

it should be around 0.4 - 0.44

I remeber someone else having this problem. he could get 0.4 at idle but on 3.8 at FT.

Mmmm

dont think ive been testing right

ill have another look tomorow

the weather might be a bit better

What exactly does the throttle position switch do anyway?

What exactly does the throttle position switch do anyway?

It measures the, er, throttle position, mainly so the ECU knows what you're asking the car to do and can inject through the injectors as required!

There's no carb remember...

Hence if it's misadjusted you might floor it and it'll think you meant 50%, or you might not touch the throttle and it'll take you straight over the stop line when you put it in gear. THis is why it's vital to the whole thing, especially in an auto, because an auto needs to know what you meant to pick the right gear.

Even worse in the daily driver, because in that one there's no throttle cable at all, just a TPS on the actual pedal! (BMWs are the same I think)

right i set the tps properly now

on idle its 0.42

and full throtle its 3.9

so that all seems fine

the tickover was at 2000rpm

so i turned the css a little which put it back to about 900rpm

the car changes gear much smoother now

but still revs out in first when going from stand still

any other ideas

thanks

steve

Hi Steve,

Did you mean you turned the CAS? if so that would change your timing, that needs to be spot on.............

Vijay

yes thats the thingy

how easy is it to set properly

and how else can you get the tickover down

would the cas setting effect the gear change ?

sorry for all the questions

thanks

steve

your gonna have to get a timing light to set that back correctly. Have you cleaned the throttle bodies (and IACV valve) and all connectors, then reset the ECU? That's what I would do and then you can adjust the idle if need be :)

Vijay

ok mate will give that ago

ive been looking at the rides section

must admit your car looks sweet mate

steve

Revs out in first ?

what does that mean mate ?.

Hi Revs at idle could be due to a boost leak. Have a listen around the engine for hissing.

its auto and wont change from first to second at high revs (will rev to about 7200)

will change when you ease off slightly

every other gear change is ok

hi vijay

thanks for your reply

ive done a search but cant find what the

iacv valve is or where it is

steve

it controls the idle (base). It's at the back of then engine near the battery. You'll see a thick rubber 90 degree bent pipe. Remove the end and spray carb cleaner down it (after you've done the throttle bodies).

OUCH!!! Get that timing set back to 15deg btdc RAPID!!!!! Its VITAL that the ignition timing is set correctly on these cars....

I'd get someone to give you a hand if I were you ;)

CheerZ,

Andy

ok will do mate

steve

oh yes, I was driving around with the timing off (still don't know how) and I had huge detting, enormous backfires and general lumpy burbling noises. Had it reset and it's run very nicely ever since.

Thankyou very much
