HELP ! I've lost my power steering.......

i've had very occasional loss of PAS since i've had my car, but normally only after sitting in slow moving traffic on a hot day, and finally getting clear.

But now, it seems like i have lost all PAS.

No loss of fluid, no warning lights, no broken belt, no nothing.

Any ideas anyone ?

I guess it's got to be one of:-

1) a pump that's not doing anything (but wouldn't it be making a horrible broken noise ?)

2) something with the rack ? although it works fine, just heavy ;) no noises

3) some sensor somewhere ? speed sensor or something ? although nothing else seems affected

help from the collective please....

I have a 4 hour round trip across london tomorrow, so i guess i'll be built like Schwarzenegger tomorrow night :)

Okay,

i did a HICAS and steering diagnosis

took me about 7 or 8 times to get into the mode !!

no problems reported...

i noticed as well, that sometimes the steering is okay, sometimes not, and i managed to get the diag mode when the steering was heavy.

So, at a loss for the problem for now..... :(

that is strange i have never heard of that craig.

ill mail you today i have that manual you can lend it is at a friends house.

ill try get hold of them they are in wimbeldon chatr to you soon.

good luck

Craig,

Does the P/S start of light and then remain stiff when you drive off and come to a stop?

If it does then I may be able to help.

warren, i have a copy of the manual on CD, but i'll take you up on that offer anyway.

Andy, when i was testing it last night, it either started up heavy and stayed heavy, or started okay. However, i didn'y go far enough to see how long it lasted for.

I will let you know after my trip to work this morning.

What do you have in mind ?

Simon and me had similar problems. Simon's prob was the speed sensor. What happens is the P/S starts of fine and when you start to drive the steering becomes stiffer. The problem is that it would not become light again when he slowed down hence the steering remaining very stiff.

My problem was similar. My speedo conversion was not wired correctly between the conversion box and the speed sensor so the ECU was not receiving the correct readings. I had to keep stopping to restart the car to reset the P/S.

I am sure that the speed sensor goes through the speedo circuit and back to the ECU, which then determines how stiff the P/S, should be. I know this because I have had my speedo cluster out many times. Once I didn't connect the speedo connector correctly and I found that the steering remained stiff!

The hicas light would flash about ten times on ours as startup.

I believe you have no warning lights.

Could your P/S belt be slipping?

to be honest, the speed sensor has been my guess for a while, but i have been waiting for some sort of warning or something.

I know the light works, and i managed the test with it heavy, so who knows.

Simon, how much was the part and fitting ?

I'll have a look through the forum as well, but i am being lazy... :)

oh yeah, no problems with it this morning

Craig, because I diagnosed the problem with the help of Anders they did not even charge the labour!!! Great blokes.

The speed sensor was about £70.

Anders is right the power light flashes 10 times or so. Perhaps your power light has blown?

Does you speedo drop off the scale at low speed?

That's how mine manifested itself.

It's fitted on the drivers side of the gearbox and cann be done on a ramp.

Mind you I pay Mit Mots to do that sort of thing for me so I wouldn't know how difficult it is.

Simon P.

P.S. See you lot in 2 weeks I'm taking the XR400 across morocco, doubt there will be much Zed spotting in the Atlas mountains!

Craig, I have a paper manual if you want one urgently - give me a ring if you need it. I suppose I should get the spoiler to you too since you've paid for it !!!
