iv had enough of recommendations for one day!!!

sorry ammar, nothing against you, just been one of those days on here

Ammar,

I got a Garmin Street Pilot 3 Deleux. Its one that you sit on your dash so you can take it into another car, it also has routes for walking, cycling etc.

It has voice directions, which although annoying when you know where you are are vital when you are driving though a city centre. The I used it to go Thor, and I got straight there. I have also used it to get to a place in Wolverhampton and a place in Leeds, both times I had to go through the city centre and I would never found the places with out it.

If you go off route it automatically recalculates how to get where you need to go. Also when coming up to a turning, roundabout or junction, the map zooms in on the road. Usually the image follow the triagle symbolising the car, but this time it displays the roundabout with the route you have to take highlighted in a different colour to the rest of the roads and you can see the trangle move along the roads. When you get past that part of the road, the screen then zooms back out to see more of the map.

The screen is 16 colours which is not much but it doesnt seem to be so little when you are using it. You dont need so many.

But the best part about it, they cost £550 from Costco. :D The cheapest I have seen which does the same as that costs £1300. They come down because there is a new model out which has a touch screen, but this is more than you need.

:D :D :D

I know its not a good picture

But this is what the screen is like, very close up. Its fully zoomed out so there isnt much detail on it.

It does zoom all the way down to street level

Whats wrong with a map, never been a prob for me :D

And only about a fiver, cheaper than a peice of electronic wizardry. Is it really that much of a problem to use a map :mac1: :slap:

Sorry, just my opinion, now dont get me wrong, I'm in no way trying to recomend maps, or even promote them, I just choose to use one :nelson:

But its a map every year. And a different one for each country if you go on holiday, oh and the, you need a street map as road atlases dont go to that much detail. So you need to buy a street map of the area you intend to go.

If I didnt have that I would need a street finder of the Leeds, Birmingham, Wolverhampton and Wigan area, most of which I would never need again, and the next time I did goto that area, I would probably need a new one because the roads change so much now a days.

Maps are fine, I have used maps many times and find my way there, but it either meant pulling over a lot to see where I was, wrong turns, and the looking through street maps when the atlas doesnt go into enough detail. Or have a passenger who is good at directions. Also most street maps or atlas's wont tell you where the nearest cash machine is, pub, sports venue, parking space, attraction, petrol station, tyre shop, police station, hospital etc etc is.

When you're tearing along a country A or B road you have to get your wife to read it for you, that's what !!!

If a voice is going to be giving directions whilst I drive, I want them to be right :D

Actually I don't use sat-nav either, I've taught Julia to read a map (but she still has to turn it upside down sometimes :D ) it's much cheaper. Though that portable unit Stuart mentions sounds good........

Richard :smw:

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I use a Pioneer one in mine with touchscreen and full post code search, what you want to spend will determine what you get. Pay £500 and you`ll get a basic system that will do the job or spend £2k and get the dogs bullocks with loads of functions. I have had a few as i need one and so far the pioneer wins.

SmartNav!! we install it on Mercs at work - very good system

also has tracking facilities & speed camera (fixed) detection available (additional subscription)

its a live system that will route around traffic jams etc.

available with or without screen (doesnt need it & i prefer it without TBH)

i think it retails at around £600 + subs, if you want to know more then PM me as i could get it installed cheaper than that for you :)

SmartNav is the best I have come acros, avoids traffic jams, takes you to places of interest as well, also loads of other features, nearest petrol station to your location, if you break down it will connect you with your recovery company, if your car gets nicked it can locate it for you. Got it fitted on my companies car, amazing how accurate it is. Retail is £499 plus fitting, you can either pay 89 pence per route, £120 a year for unlimited routes or £350 for five years. You can also move it from car to car. Can't rave abot it enough, gonna get one for mine.

Ya5een - no worries mate

Stuart, Vijay, Paul C, Bob and CC300zx - Thankyou very much indeed for all the help and I will be conatcting you guys soon for more info on these systems (apology in advance for any trouble it may cause you guys).

cheers

Ammar
