Survival of the fittest! Thinning the heard of blind wildebeast!! :xxx:

So that would suggest people who speed and crash and hurt others are the weakest..... Yup I agree :p:D

Most people have an inflated opinion on how well they drive, so they drive fast 'cos I'm a good driver me. That was me until I went to a couple of track day/ rally schools with professional drivers and realised how sh*t I was at controlling a car at high speed compared to them.

JEEZ!!! Did we all have SENSIBLE pills for lunch!!???!?!? :slap:

LOL no I just like to think that I took my IAM test (and passed it lol) for a good reason. If I kill myself then it aint gonna affect me is it - its the knock on effect for everyone else - friends, family etc and thats just if I only killed ME.....

IAM test is cr@p IMHO. Doesn't mean u r safer than a non-IAM driver at all. Just means u r more confident, and that can cause problems in itself.

LMFAO yeah ok :D Have you done any of the training? Have you taken the test? Only then will I accept your comments :D

sounds like a good argument brewing

gotta go soon, so will continue later or tomorrow...

for now...we do it at our work and I wnet out a few times with an instrutress!

I was either going too fast or too slow ! I think it's over-the-top sometimes and how well iot works for you is subjeective - IMHO if u drive to your own abilities and use comon-sense u will be safer than trying to drive accoridng to IAM guidlines which don't suit your own driving style.

Also at our place, they don't rcognise autos which I would say are safer - that's why I gave up the lessons.

I think some of the 30/40 speed limits are inappropriately placed. i.e. some of them are almost half a mile out of villages where there is nobody and nothing, just fields.

To add insult to injury, I've noticed that these arrive alive vans DO NOT the majority of the time park in or near accident black spots. They park on the outside of villages where they can nick someone as they leave a 30mph zone in an area where there is no danger whatsoever. That IMO is taking the p!ss.

This post is getting boring.

Just use common sense when driving and you will all die very old men...

Some nice facts, figures & some testimonials from top plods

It's not speed that kills, it's people driving beyond their ability & confidence that kills, coupled with sheer stupidity.

I was 'travelling' down a wide open dual carriageway the other day with very little traffic, late for work as per... road was clear, dry and visibility was v good. I'm going down at a fair few knots, theres a car (woman cinquecento) about 200yds away from a truck on the inside lane im about twenty yards away and the speed differential must have been about 60mph and she starts to 'overtake' the truck 200yds away at 55mph by pulling out right in front of me, I immediately had to undertake her - If I had hit her, yes I was speeding and would be deemed to be at fault, but I would argue long and hard about speed being the cause of the accident. More likey due to the womans quite obvious recent lobotomy :slap:

You should have seen the hazard and acted on it though! Its quite possible that with that speed differential she didn't see you ;)

She probably thought that she could out accelerate you!!!

yes but equipment is stored and also surveyers come at all hours to check out the work,

just drive at 50mph ffs, its not going to kill you.

I know someone who was nearly killed by a lorry hitting a cone because he was speeding and couldn't swerve in time..... its a bit different when it comes home like that mate.

Are you sure the lorry driver was actually speeding and not falling asleep at the wheel through having to go so slow ? He can only go 56 / 60 max, 40 on A roads.

I cant imagine an unmanned JCB or any other plant on a stretch of unmanned roadworks wondering on to the carriageway all by itself and totalling my car.

If its a temporary road surface or contra flow i think most drivers will slow down anyway. If its just a row of cones and no work being done , conditions fine , road quiet, where's the danger? The only hazzard would be the gatso itself. IMO :-)

No, Oates

the inherent problem with speed limits and hence speed cameras is they have no regard for driving conditions wrt weather, other cars, driver/car abilities etc. AND they are often poorly set - I think this is what frustrates people - coupled with the often cynical siting of cameras to "catch people out" - THAT doesn't make the roads any safer ! It's a case of follow the rules irrespective of common sense; so real safety comes second to conformity.

urm, the cameras you are talking about do exactly that, they impose a 50mph limit on a road where people are used to going 70mph, it is assumed that they can handle their car at that speed, it also makes it safer for workers to judge the speed of cars incase they need to walk out into the road. Road work cameras are mainly there to make it safe for roadside workers and their unions like to have them there,

wot I mean is someone doing 55 past these roadworks when no workers are there will get a fine etc. despite there being no significant extra risk.

WHILE

someone doing 60 round a national speed limit road blind bend when it's not safe (ie. very risky and quite dangerous) to do that speed cannot be prosecuted if he maintains control of the vehicle and doesn't hit anyone.

Comprendez ?

I beg to differ

until 13yrs ago I spent 5yrs as a HGV/LGV C+E driver four of those years in the UK. I can asure you that most motorway accidents occure due to Road works and that mile upon mile of coned off motorway is not necessary. Most of this work could be carried out durring the night and the cones removed during the day thus not having to reduce speed and create bottle necks. If we are serious about reducing accidents and not about raising revenue. Then surely a higher Police presence in clearly vissable patrol cars would be a better solution. Problem is they cost more per year than a camera and council servayors think them selves too special to work nights

Most nights cones are put away unless there are obstructions or a dangerous section of road that hasn't been fully repaired or needs to dry, I know workman that complain about having to remove and replace cones every day, unfortuently the cameras arnt so easy to remove and are generally only placed where they feel people use speed that cause problems to workers.

at the end of the day, you arnt meant to be speeding, so if you get caught take it like a man.

No, Oates

quite right, oates is her (the girl i work with) maiden name.. small world!

Now this is far more like it Nelson mate! You haven't started a good argument for ages. And when you do, you try and morph into an auto/manual debate. Come on, don't stop there... there must be some correlation between how crap IAM are and their inability to recognise the potential of mass reduction.

Good work mate! Keep it coming!
