I've seen someone advertising a bead blasted plenum on the inside for 18% better air flow - has anyone ever seen this or had experience of this?

Your thoughts please.

Kindest Regards,

Alex

Its always a good idea if possible to polish the inside of any port to help the gases flow even. I could quite believe you could get that kind of result. How much is he asking for this service??

Well if you consider that you pay about £100 for a std plenumm. Its not a bad price considering the performance increase stated.

Have you ever tried polishing a plenumm yourself. NOT a nice job.

As for one that is bead blasted,I find it hard to beleive that it will give 18% better flow.

Am with Mac on that one, bead blasting will not remove enough material and leave a smooth finish required to gain the increase, Extrude/Honed plenums will though, i believe an abrasive paste is forced through the inside taking a layer of material away and leaving it smooth, i looked for this service in UK before, no such luck though !

HI smithy,

just been delving around in the archives :D

at one stage you were talking about geting a honed upper and lower from stillen - did you? was it worth it?

alex

no mate, simply cos of cost really, bored the TB's out and matched the plenum to suit then chromed it and spent ages looking for someone in UK to extrudude hone it, but found bog all.

smithy

the plenum 0n my s12 is tefl0n c0ated internally, made a hell 0f a diff - much quicker resp0nse.

Errr Is your "o" working? you used 0 (Zero) instead?

Erm, isn't extrude honing the same as bead blasting??? Extrude honing is passing an abrasive material through the tracts - as far as I can see thats the same as the bead blasting LOL

I was gonna say the same thing! but thought i'd sound silly

With all the talk of Plenums at the moment, today I spoke to a guy I know who runs his own company offering bead-blasting etc. According to him, the difference between bead-blasting and extrusion in terms of effect on air-flow would be "minimal in the extreme"(his words). To find significant improvement the "gas-flow" process would have to be used. One benefit the extrude/honing process has over bead-blasting though with something like a Plenum is that the abrasive paste would pass through the whole of the internal workings whereas with bead-blasting, apparently you are limited to a 45 degree angle of attack dictated by the machinery involved, meaning some of the internal surface would remain unaffected. At least I think that's what he was getting at, never the easiest guy to understand! :)

Leigh.

Yep, completely understandable. Maximum angle on a Z plenum though would be FAR less than 45 deg ;) At the end of the day, the two principles are virtually identical...
