Last night I had power steering failure with the result that PS Oil is now everywhere.

Having looked at it this morning, in the hope that it was a hose, it appears that the shaft of the pump has moved forward (see pic A), has anyone else had this happed, can you rebuild the pump or is it a replacement, is so how much?

The drive belt is also running out of true as seen looking down (pic B).

Any help would be really appreciated.

When mine failed - the seals went, new pump job - about £550 all in for Nissan to do the job. Warranty covered it though so phew. I doubt it is fixable, best to get a new or reconditioned one - Nissan do these but no guarantee on the part.

it could be the pump seized because it ran dry, due to a leak somewhere else.

so before fitting a new pump I would check for any leaks in the system.

Thanks Eric,

Had no prior warning or leaking.

I'm getting humpy at the moment as I cant get the drive belt off, just too tight - I've loosened everything but to no avail - any ideas?

Just in case you have no joy fixing the pump, I have a steering pump you can have from my Z that I dismantled a few months ago. You can have it for £90 if you're interested. Feel free to phone or email me.

Thanks

Tim the power steering pumps are real tight to move for some reason make sure you have loosened the bolt behind the pulley , you need to turn the pulley until the hole in it is lined up with the bolt and then fiddle a small drive socket in to undo.It will still be hard to move though. Jeff TT

Thanks Jeff,

Managed to remove the offending item yesterday, my hands look like a grease monkey's now smile.gif

Didn't have a problem removing the shaft, once the drivebelt was removed it fell out!! Guess I found the problem smile.gif

What puzzles me is that all the hoses seem to be okay and there was still some oil in the pump so what caused this? Could it have been as simple as the front bearing collapsing, I heard the bits, presumably the ball bearings, hit the bottom of the car when it broke, and there wasn't much left when I removed it. Any ideas guyz - just curious that's all.

Andy - Thanks for the offer of the pump, I've sourced one from Mark Brand in Ireland so, hopefully it'll be with me by the w/e so I can fit it - a Z is very heavy without p/s biggrin.gif

later..

Tim
