Just a quick word of warning to those of you who may consider buying a second hand engine. One of our customers supplied a second hand engine from a well know engine specialist which apparantly had been compression tested. We took out his old engine and replaced it with the new one. Firstly the turbo`s let go straight away so we put his old units on the engine. At this point we spoke to the company and advised them of the situation, they didn`t seem to keen to help the customer out, so we put the engine back in started up and then the head gasket let go. Expensive. We rang the company who again told us they compression test all there engines so we checked it out and found the compresiion way down on one bank. I don`t want to mention the compamy name as we are giving them a chance to rectify this first.

Basically if you are considering a second hand engine and the company tell you it has been tested then either get it tested yourself when you recieve it or ask somebody independant to go and check it first. I t could save you a few pennys in the long run.

Cheers

I think name and shame as they are not very forthcoming

I think give them the opportunity to rectify the problem BEFORE starting slanging matches !

I agree.

For the record this is a copy of the letter which goes out today.

Dear Sirs,

We have enclosed an invoice for your attention. As you are aware we bought an engine from your company recently on behalf of one of our customers. We were told that the engine comes with a 60 day warranty.

Firstly we would like to point out the engine that was supplied came with faulty turbo`s which we had to change and replace with the customers original turbo`s. When speaking to your company we were advised to send them back for you to inspect and then exchange for replacement units. At this point we were told that you compression test all your engines so we should have no problem with the engine. We put the engine back in then found it to start smoking on one bank and found middle cylinder on the nearside to be misfiring. We checked the fuel injector and cranked engine. At this point we found water in the cylinder chamber and spark plug, we suspected the head gasket to be faulty so we checked the engine with a compression test and found the compression to be down to 75psi on one cylinder and 100psi on another cylinder in the same bank. Clearly this is not acceptable so we would ask you to replace the engine with turbo`s complete and settle invoice for labour which both ourselves and our customer believe should be met by you.

We look forward to resolving this matter as soon as possible.

Regards

Johnny , who actually bought the engine you or your customer ?? in your first post you put your customer and in your letter you put that you bought it

Ryan

Good luck with it Johnny. If its under warranty surely they will have to replace the engine and tubs, but will they stretch to labour as well ?

Geeeeeezer.

The customer gave us the cheque to send them mate. Why?

Just curious Mate, I should imagine you will get a much better response than an individual. Did the engine come with any warranty ???

Hi chris. I thought you wer going to pop back. Hows your car running. Have you got the oil temp sensor yet?

If your customers want the controllers fit and set up let me know but remember if gauges are wanted what is needed mate.

Because we spoke to the company direct and they assured us the engine was spot on we carried out the work. Simply, they sent a duffer. No offence intended Andy Pandy. The customer is chasing them as well so watch this space.

Sounds bad, keep us posted, I'm very interested in the end result.

even if they did not supply a warranty the goods are not fit for purpose and any court will settle in full.

You may have problems with the labour charges i guess though,

The company supplying the engine did verbally inform that their engine had been compression tested and to continue with installation. Surely that qualifies for a refund of any further work involved.

I wish you both luck, and keep us informed,

Simon.

Mmm there is an equally suspect supplier of CA18DETs (S13 lump).

I wonder if it'll turn out to be the same company.

Once they have exchanged the unsuitable engine and Turbo's for an engine and turbo's that is satisfactory to requirements, you will in the eyes of the law no longer be suffering a lost. If then they make an offer to cover any of the labour costs that would only be as a jesture of good will. So I'm sorry to say but, I doubt you will be able to recover the Labour cost.

Further more I'm sorry to say this but, your customer would have a right to expect you as a competant professional to have carried out sufficient checks "i.e. a compression test" prior to installation. Also, if you have purchased the engine on behalf of your customer I'm affraid this again make you liable. As you are for the state and condition of all goods and servises you provide.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news mate better to know.

Good Luck

Mark.

I take your point however the company gave the engine a 60 day warranty tag which covers such things as internals etc. If we would supply an engine then of course we would have checked the compression. Get this. Our customer has just spoken with the company and they didn`t even know what psi was. They have agreed to replace the engine and we have told the customer that in this case we will be doing a check before we take it any further. We did stste to both parties that the labour will have to be met before the car leaves from day one. Looks like the chaps should go and join the circus.

Tooley, you need to get your ass down here mate and take a look at our star man.

Make sure you have a disclaimer or your argument if it got sticky would amount to "ingnorance of the fact" which is a legal term when someone claims "he told me so" even if its in writing. You are a profesional to whom your customer has confidence that you do as you perport. Remember favors that back fire will land in your lap as you are the expert. So tread carefully and you shouldhave disclaimers for these things

Mark.

You just got a job a GPS mate. I would love to pick your brains. Good man.

Hi Johnny

I only know these things because like you I've gone that extra bit to help the customer and have been burned for my trouble. Also I got dooped very baddly and the only way to recover my losses was to study contract law for three and a half years and win my case. Which led me to my present employment. i'm not a lawyer.

Excellent. Thanks for your help mate.

Cheers
