Thinking of doing my own oil changes rather than driving all the way down to ******** each time.

Im sure Jeff uses magnatec but I could be wrong.

One of the local garages told me to only use fully synthetic 5/40

What do you guys use

Just go for the best fully synthetic you can find. It's only £30 odd.

I use Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w-50 myself, but I know a lot of the guy's here swear by Castrol RS 10w-60. Yer pays yer money and takes yer choice.

.... but everyone will have an opinion on this.

Andy that will be from SE then as they use the same :p Castrol RS 10-60 for me although very hard to get hold of now.

Yep, I think they still use that, but I buy mine from the local Motorquip trade counter.

Was advised by Jeff @ ******** to use Magnatec, he says

that the z wasn't designd to use fully synthetic oil, as it

wasn't available when the z's were new.

well things must and do change , optimax was not around when the Zed was built but we still use that , I have tried different oils and just find that the car sounds better on 10w60 than it does on thinner grades , probably due to the age of the engine.

Ok, might as well go for some nice cheap Mazola cooking oil, and a can of SLIK 50!! That should sort it nice, as they were both around when the Z was new! :D

5W40 or 0W40 full synthetic

Seconded...

I use 5W40 Shell Helix Ultra (fully synth) at present. But for the next service I've ordered some Miller's fully synth 5W40 from Mike Feeny at MJP (see traders forums). Mike knows his Zeds and reckons this stuff gives good results. Plus it's only about £30 for 5 litres (I was paying £36 for 4 Litres of the shell stuff).

Oh and fully synthetic was probably around when the Zed was new, I believe Mobil-1 has been on sale since 1990-ish (as was Duckhams QXR - the advert showed a 1989 Ferrari F40)....

Fully synth was developed for all high performance engines, as mineral oils (and semi-synth) were simply not up to the job, especially in turbo cars at high temps.

Richard ;)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

i used magatec and after a while it totally lost its properties, smoke was billowing out the zorsts like no tomorow, thought id blown a tubo seal or something, stuck in some mobile 15/50 fully synth and it cured the problem, this happened after less than 3000 miles btw, i dont think magatec is up ot the severe heat these engines produce. just my opinion tho.

i've always used fully suynthetic in the turbo cars i've run, apparently semi's can't stand the temps. My current car (now don't laugh, it's an S13 200SX) has run happily on Halford full synth for 5 years without a problem, now up to 120,000 miles and no smoke or noise (on original turbo!!!). I know 300's are more sensitive but the principal is the same.

I tried Magnatec on the ZX (Bluebird, again, don't laugh, we all start somewhere!!) years ago until I realised it was semi and not fully synthetic, but to be honest in that car it didn't make much of a difference. Can't tell you the long term effects, I rolled it within a year!!

Complete *****x!

Mobil Synth 20/50 here in NJ

I have 42000 miles on my 94TT . I have used Synth from the first oil change. No problems.

Then again my Z has never seen rain!

All the best from NJ USA

Tony Blair is the Best

Valvoline Racing (The Best)

Shell Helix Ultra (Very Good)

Mobil 1 (too thin, makes a car noisy)

Use Xtralube Z1 when you change the oil. providing you use a reasonable make and grade of oil, this will more than make up for anything "lacking" in the performance of the oil.....Trust me!!!!

I agree with the mobil-1 thing (0w40, anyway). My Supra always sounded a little noisier with it and the oil pressure seemed a little lower at m-way speed. Other 0W40 oil (eg Castrol RS - sold in Halfords or BP garages) never gave these symptoms.

A performance car specialist told me this was a problem specific to Mobil-1 so I've never used it in my ZX. I used it once in my corsa (which had under 20K miles) and it seemed more rattly from cold. Again I now use Castrol RS 0w40 or Shell Helix Ultra in that and it's much better.

Mmm.. oil choice is a subjective issue, many motorist will stick with brand all their motoring life swearing it the best, some will not be fussed either way, some just do not bother changing it at all. The remaining will look for advise or recomendation which is fair, having been asked this question so many times I call on my 26 years experience of been a motorist and the owner of many, many cars in that time from basic to high performance and given that last year I personally changed in the region of 500 litres of oil in Zeds ( know how much because I had to pay to dispose of it!) that i give an opinion based on experience and not brand hype.

This thread is exactly what the forum is for, so idea`s , advise and recomendations can be discussed, what a sorry site to see that this very worthy thread was trashed by the club secretary with his view and his unique way of delivering it?

Interesting how many people rate Magnatec as their top choice, suprisingly enough, its only semi-synthetic, i use carstol RS 10/60 as recommended by the bods on here, its fully synthetic and has worked fine for me for the past 3 or 4 changes.

Shame because I am his minder ;)

Ive used magnatec for the last two oil changes. But before that, it was Shell Helix Ultra 10w60.

Oil is just as clean when I change it now, but oil pressure seems to be a bit lower now on idle.

Magnatec is semi-sythetic and definitely inferior to Helix Ultra (fully synthetic)
