A while ago I had an intermittent odometer problem, I got some great advice from my post. Now it appears to have packed up completely. A search reveals that it is quite common to have intermittent stoppages of the odometer. Do you think that because mine has packed up completely its more than just dirt in the cogs?

How long do you reckon the whole job takes ?

In Andy's post he mentioned he had to grind the heads off the Jap security screws..........will I need to do that just to clean the cogs ?

Thanks,

John

I can't quite remember how it all works right now, but there is an electric motor in there somewhere and lots of cogs. It's highly likely that if both the odo and the trip have packed up then it's a common problem - mine was the gearing. Not sure about the screws, maybe it's only the jap ones that have the security screw.

Hi, cant help you with your questions im afraid but if you find you need a new odometer I have a known good working cluster from a 91 na showing 69k kilometers, I know you only need an odometer but it may be cheaper to buy the whole cluster. Just thought I would make the offer. Richard.

Thanks Andy,

Yes, both have packed up........I guess I am going to have to take it all apart, maybe this weekend, its supposed to get a bit warmer from Monday on.

Cheers,

John

On my last zed the odometer went a similar way, intermittent then dead completely. I followed all the 'how tos' on cleaning them and I managed to get it back to intermittent

My guess is that with a really good clean you would get it working again. Getting it out didn't take long at all. Guess the length of the job depends on how long you spend squirting contact cleaner into the motor!

Good luck

David

Oh yes, mine was a jap import NA. No special screws or tools required. But perhaps that just means it had been clocked!

Thanks Richard,

To be honest, I dont know whats involved in switching clusters, I have only had my car about 8 months, when I bought it it had already been switched to mph (speedo and odometer)

If I knew more about how they convert the odometer to miles, I would know if there would be any possibility of putting parts off yours into mine.

When they change the imports over, do they just put in a whole new cluster?

If advice from others indicate that there are parts on yours that will fix mine (while maintaining odometer reading in miles ??) how much do you want for the cluster ?

Thanks,

John

Thanks David,

Did you use type of spray contact cleaner that Maplin or RS components sell ?

Where do you spray it ? all over the cogs ? anywhere else ?

Do you reckon about 4 hours to do the job ?

Thanks

John

From what I've seen of the inside of the cluster and odo you would have no problems fixing yours with good bits. Chances are you would simply need the motor from the working odo and leave your own cogs and display bits in place. Very simple fix.

If the glass on the cluster is unscratched I would like that! Whoever did the conversion on my current zed was a bit clumsy with the screwdriver!!

I did use spray contact cleaner. Not sure exactly what sort, just some that was kicking around in my uncle's garage.

The cogs in mine seemed clean to be honest. My problem was the motor was full of muck. Spraying into the vents and turning the motor by hand had loads of black stuff pouring out of it. I think it had a big build up of carbon or something in it that gave it a rough patch when you turned it. Not sure I would ever have got it perfect. Also, think the contact cleaner might have been doing something nasty to some insulation inside the motor as some tiny bits of yellow plastic came out too!

I was kind of wondering where to get a replacement stepper motor from but writing off the car solved my problems!

Think 4 hours should be enough although taking the dash apart may take some time if you haven't done it before.

David

This one is in very good clean condition, only the sort of scratches you would normally find on the clear plastic from being wiped with a cloth, I really dont know what its worth if I say £50 let me know if im overpricing it. From looking at this one I think you need to undo about 3 screws to swap the odometer over. Richard

Richard, not know how these km to miles conversions work, (do they replace the whole cluster or stick some device in to convert?) would putting your odometer in mine cause it to record in km?

Thanks

John

I think if you just unscrew this one out and put it in your cluster it will work fine without affecting the conversion but you might want to get someone else to confirm this first, really want to see the whole cluster not just the odometer if thats ok but at least you will have the rest in case you need it.

It doesn't take long to get the clocks out.

Some of the speedo conversions are done with a little box and then a sticker on the speedo face (I'm not a fan of this)

Some can be done wby substituing a resistor in the clocks (then you have to do the ECU as well)

Or you can replace with UK spec clocks (and then do the ECu as well)

Andy,

My previous car, an MR2 had a sticker on the speedo face, but the odometer was still in km. Does the fact that my odometer records miles means that a full conversion was done. Another thought......could someone just have repplaced the entire cluster with a UK cluster ? If that was the case, and I replace the odometer with a km one, I would be recording now in km ??

Richard, I guess I need to do a bit more research before I buy yours.

Thanks for everyones help.

John

If the cluster is a UK one it will have a boost guage as all UK ones were turbo models, a conversion will change the signal the cluster recieves and make the speedo and odometer read in miles.

  • Author

Oh thats right....I was not thinking, Mine must be a Import with some sort of conversion as it does not have a boost gauge.

I think I need to take it off and see what the problem is, if it turns out that the odometer is fooked then I will contact you to see if you still have the cluster.

Thanks

John
