I have standard uk rear wheels with 245's on, anyone know what is the maximum width tyre I can put on the rear?

Thanks.

Well I have 17 x 8s and I have 255/40s on the rear - does that help?

On 8.5 inch stock rears, I would say 255/45/16 or maybe 265/40/16. But these sizes get rare limiting your choice of brands and increasing costs.

If you want wider you really need to go for bigger wheels.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

..and 17's look the dogs without compromising the ride - so long as you pick a nice wheel design that is

I have a set of 18's 8.5" wide managed to put a pair of 265/35/18 on tha back no probs

Problem is if you have too wide tyres on a rim which its not made for the, tyre will bulge at the top.

i think its betta to get just one size up cos th bulge will stop u scraping th kerb, noticed this quite alot when i was driving a hire car coupla months back, i must have hit th kerb planty of times when parking, not one scratch on any of th alloys

Thanks guys. I realise that the best option is to get bigger alloys but my budget can't stretch that far yet as I have other engine mods to do first. Would 265 be ok or is that too big?

According to Demon tweeks tyre size/rim width calculator (on Toyo Tyres page, if you have the catalogue) 265 tyres should be used on rims between 9 and 10.5 inches wide.

Lowering the profile to 40 (ie265/40/16) may be OK, although 255 would be better (use on 8.5 - 10 inch wide rims). say 255.45.16

The trouble is finding those sizes for a 16 inch wheel. 245s are the widest 16 inch tyres I've seen anywhere, as I said earlier if you can get wider they will be fekking expensive coz they are so rare. 255s are common for 17s and upward so prices aren't too bad (I paid ยฃ120, fitted, for a 255/40/17 Goodyear F1 before Xmas)

I'd stick to stock size until you can splash out on bigger rims.....
