CAS = Crank Angle Sensor.

For the location. Its number 4.

Standard timing is 15° BTDC

You adjust the timing by losening the 3 screws around the CAS and twisting it. I suggest you take it to a garage to find out the timing and correct it if needed. Any garage should be able to do it.

thanx stuart

wot should they do when i take it to the garage? how will they find out th timing? (so i no ther doing it right)

BTDC? wots that mean?

Basically what happens they get a strobe light gun a attatch a clip to the cylinder 1 plug. When cylinder 1 sparks the strobe light detects it and flashes.

They point the strobe gun onto the timing belt down the front of the engine. There is a plate down there with numbers and marks on. When the light flashes you are able to see a mark on the timing belt and its location along the palte, which you cant see without the stobe because it goes too fast. If the timing is right the strobe should flash when the mark on the timing belt is at the 15º BTDC (Befroe Top Dead Centre, before the cylinder reaches right to the top of the cylinder)

Twisting the CAS causes the cylinder to spark earlier or later and so will the light and the mark will be lit up at a different value along the plate.

Do you understand what I mean? Any garage will be able to do it as all cars have to have it done.

Just remember to tell them standard is 15º

and not to take the reading off the pick up wire near the PTU.

will this also make th car idle rough?? mines allover tha place even when warmed up, constantly moving about from 700 to about 1100 rpm

If the idle is all over the place, it sounds more like an air leak or passing EGR valve.

To test the EGR, pull the vacuum line to it off the solenoid and suck on it - if the revs don't drop then it's stuck!

I wish ....

Got det problems on mine at the minute too!

Get the fuel pressure and timing checked out firstly. It might even just be a crap tank of fuel.

will do john, i havnt actually heard th pinking myself but then i havnt heard how a normal 300zx engine should run so i dnt know if it is, at the moment am goin on wot chunk told me. does it only pink whilst driving or would it also pink when revd in neutral. i just warmed th car up today cos its been sittin for a while and after it warmed up i revd it, th first time i heard i kinda of water gushing noise, when i revved it after that i cdnt hear anythin that sounded odd

oh yeh my cars stock apart from HKS induction kit, super scarab large bore down pipes (de-catted) and a HKS super dragger exhaust. dnt know if that make a difference

apparently det sounds like nuts and bolts in a biscuit tin!

At mid-range revs it does, after 5 or 6K rpm, it sounds like a sparkler - "kkkkkkkkkkkk" - which is very bad, since the damage done is done much faster at higher revs. A voice of experience? O yes - that's what happened to my first engine, with a knackered blower! (One bank running rich, i.e. no damage, the other running super lean - meltdown!)
