Just want to see if there's any interest in these units - http://action-replay.co.uk/MobileComputing/Products/Tracker.htm

The way they work is quite simple. It's a small box which you install into the car (12v supply needed) and then a gps unit is plugged into that and left in your glove box or somewhere indiscreet (or you can get the high sensitive GPS unit which is a bit more expensive but can be hidden anywhere). To track your vehicle you simply dial the sim card number from a normal modem (not broadband) and you will have a map with current location of vehicle, you can track movement at all times.

Advantages:

Track your vehicle at any time.

No yearly subscription fees. The only charges you have is the mobile phone phone call charge for as long as you are connected to your tracker.

You can plug in a laptop via a serial port and have a navigation GPS unit for directions.

You can plug in a laptop and download the last movements of your vehicle.

It can send your mobile phone a message to tell you your car has moved from it's current location (it has a motion sensor built in).

If your car is stolen, you can find your vehicle and tell the thieving scum what you think of them ;)

Disadvantages:

Not insurance approved. I spoke to the guy tonight who said they are hopeing to be Thatcham approved in the near future.

As you can see the price for the unit itself is normally £375. I have bought from this guy before and he has given me great aftermarket service. He has agreed to a price of £300 max, all in for a quantity of 5 (tracker unit, GPS unit, Sim card, UK & Ireland software). If you want the higher sensitive aerial, it will be slightly more. He is going to get back to me on Monday with hopefully a better price after he has spoken to the manufcaturers.

If anyone's interested, we can move this into the GB forum.

oh yeh wot bout th cops?

What about them? How much time are they really gone spend looking for your car? The great thing about this is if your car ever goes missing, you will know where it is. I understand how the insurance might be a problem, but this will pay for itself within 3 years of normal subscriptions (of tracking).

Yes it is easily removed and put into another vehicle and yes it does come with all the software you need :)

The normal aerial is about 1.5 inch square and can be left in the glovebox, on the dash or somewhere not hidden deep. The more sensitive aerial can be mounted under things hidden right away.

Questions are no problem, I wouldn't want anyone buying something they weren't 100% happy with :)

Vijay

well with the TRACKER one when th car gets stolen they set it to give off a signal which is followed by th police, thy hunt th car down for you and have it transported to ur home

  • Author

no disrespect but do you honestly believe the Police are gonna rush out straight away? You just have to look at threads that have been posted which show how much the Police care when our cars are vandalized/stolen. I just think that the huge advantage with something like this is you can track it straight away :)

Vijay

i suppose, but then u got to do all th running round yourself, how long can u keep chasing your car?

  • Author

lol, yeah but the good thing is you can express your feelings to the person who stole it in your own personal way :D

Vijay

yeh n then in our F**kd up legal system th cops do you instead of th guy who stole ur car

theres too much do it yorself involved with this one. why dont you try sorting out a deal with TRACKER vijay?

To be honest, I'd resent paying somone £110+ a year for the subscription. It costs enough each year to own a Z as it is.

I personally don't think it's much work wiring up a positive and negative feed, I would image an hour for the whole job.

Vijay

I be fair, if your car does have a tracker the police do go for it. There is very little police can do if you car is stolen, just put a notice on it so if the numberplate is caught somewhere it will come up stolen. There are police cars now which read number plates automatically as they driveby. Whether it is linked to the police database where it will show up stolen is another thing.

If the car location is known, they cann't not act on it. The car is stolen, they know the location and the person who stole will most probably be driving it.

The only thing I would be worried about, would the police use the information from this GPS here? The would have to phone up the mobile and they would get billed for it.

Other trackers systems, the service providers actually contact the police directly and tell them where it is. The police also have a hand held unit which tells them the direction and distance when they get close.

This unit is very good but I would be too tempted to go where my car is armed with a crow bar, especially if the police dont really do anything about it.

By the way about the subscription for the other trackers, the ones I have seen you can pay I think £300 and its subscribed for the life of the cars existance.

Hello Stuart,

Is is the £300 for the supply, fitting and subscription? And don't forget, if you have a laptop this is a GPS navigation system too.

Vijay

No!

Im not having a go at the system. Ya5een said he didnt want to pay £100+ a year subscription, but you can pay £300 or something and you get it all the time.

This thing is a good package. I was thinking of trying to make something like that myself, but would cost a hell of a lot more as a small laptop or PDA would be needed to run it from the car. But like I said, that would just cost too much. ;)

Hello Stu,

Vijay

LOL

Sorry ;)

The trackers I have looked at a few years ago where about £300-£400 to have installed + £100 suscription per year or £300 or so for the life time of the car. But you cant transfer the tracker from one car to another

Vijay

Hi,

If you press the link on my first post, there is a picture of it on the top right. That is the actual control unit and the GPS receiver is a small unit (2"x2") with a lead that plus into the control unit - that's it, nice and simple.

Some Q&A's:

On the Key features specification it says that it is dual band and then later it under the specification, it says that it has a tri-band modem, which is correct?.

It is actually dual-band. They were going to make them tri-band but then

realised they didn't have the maps for USA so there was no point!

What is the additional cost of the high sensitive GPS unit?

£25

What does it cost to call the sim card number from a BT land line?

To find the current location of the unit the call duration will be less than

30 secs. Cost depends on who's SIM card you are using, is it on friends and

family etc etc

How is the geo-fencing enabled and what does it do if the car is moved, send a text? Will it alert you if the unit itself is being tampered with?

GeoFencing is enabled from the mapping software supplied with it. You can

set it to alert if the vehicle goes out of the fenced area or into it. It

only sends an alert if it goes crosses the boundary.

You can use one of the two digital inputs to send you an alert if the

vehicle is tampered with. Put 12v into it from anything and it'll send an

alert

trying to persuade my friend to get one as well. he wants to know what happens if the power supply to the unit is cut (i am assuming the power suppply is the car battery).

cheers
