Just installing Windows XP Home, Office XP Pro and Norton Internet Security 2004 Pro on a friends new computer for him.

So far I've had to download:

97.4mb in the first load of Windows Updates

52mb in the second load of Windows Updates

??mb coming in the third/fourth loads of Windows Update

23mb for Norton System Works

4mb in the first load of Office Update

50mb in the second load of Office Update

??mb coming in the third load of Office Update

Plus whatever else needs downloading.

Reckon on being close to 300mb by the time I've got up to date drivers for everything.

Can you imagine having to deal with that with a modem?

And every time you need to rebuild the PC coz windows has gone belly up - you have to install ALL that lot all over again.

Wonderful.

HA!. I have a 9600 baud modem in the garage.

Try installing the SP1 first as most updates are on there. The problem with MS UPDATE, is it will install loads of patches and then install the SP1.

Get broadband!

I just installed the whole shooting match the other day and it still took around an hour it'll take about 2 days with a modem!

Then they slip in new patches to let Mr Gates know exactly what you are using and doing and to slyly crook certain copying programs that they dont want you using!
